Current English pronunciation pedagogy focuses on intelligible pronunciation instead of native-like accuracy. Thus suprasegmental features are identified as the guiding principle for pronunciation teaching whereas segmental features are considered less important. Of many suprasegmental features, stress in particular plays an important role in English as stress is essential when recognizing and pronouncing a word. Therefore the aim of the study was to investigate Korean English learners’ production of lexical and phrasal stress and the relationship between stress production and pronunciation assessment. For the study, Genie Korean L2 English speech corpus was used which is Korean English learners’ graded speech corpus. From this speech corpus disyllabic words were extracted from each level to analyze lexical stress production. Also to look at phrasal stress production, noun phrases and verb phrases were extracted from each level. Stressed syllables are usually pronounced with higher pitch, longer duration and greater intensity than unstressed syllables and in this study stress production was examined in terms of vowel duration. Hence to analyze lexical and phrasal stress production, duration of both stressed and unstressed syllables were measured. Using these measurements paired t-test was conducted to see if stressed syllables were produced with longer duration than unstressed syllables. In addition, to see if the difference between duration of stressed syllables and unstressed syllables has any significant difference depending on level, Anova was carried out. The results showed that Korean English learners generally pronounced stressed syllables with longer duration than unstressed syllables. However the difference between duration of stressed syllables and unstressed syllables varied depending on level. The higher level groups pronounced stressed syllables much longer than unstressed syllables compared to the lower level groups. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a correlation between pronunciation assessment and the ratio of unstressed syllable duration to stressed syllable duration. In other words, speakers that produced stressed syllables with much longer duration than unstressed syllables were classified as higher level groups in assessment.
