This study aims to highlight the necessity of seeking student-centered classes in response-centered literature education, to present a student question-generation strategy as a specific instruction method for activation of literature responses of the students, and to observe any response changes after applying it to actual classes. And post-reading changes in their perceptions of the effects of the strategy were categorized into their perceptions of asking a question and their perceptions of motive for reading and attitude towards it to observe the changes. Specifically, in Chapter Ⅱ an investigation focusing on literature (writing on a particular subject) review was conducted for consideration of a trend in student-centered literature education and of basics of theories of response-centered literature education. A 'student question' was defined as a student's act of asking about something he/she does not know, wonders about, and wishes to learn more about after reading - the students being considered as the main agent of generating a question - and applicability of the strategy was explored with a focus on metacognitive awareness theory and schema theory. In addition, the starting point of response-centered literature education, namely Rosenblatt's reader-response theory, was considered; the concept of 'response' (the core of the theory) and types and scope of response were explored; and the scope of the response analysis for the study for this thesis was redetermined. Furthermore, as for question types for the strategy, 3 types of questions were presented through QAR (question answer relationship) by Raphael (1982): 'Right There'. 'Think and Search', 'On My Own'. To apply it, the Gradual Release model by Pearson and Gallagher (1983), the general model of reading strategy-based instruction, was introduced. In Chapter Ⅲ, based on the theoretical background discussed in Chapter Ⅱ a specific method for the research was designed, and the method was applied in the response-centered literature class, the 13th session. The procedure for applying it consisted of 4 phases presented by Pearson and Gallagher (1983): the teacher's demonstration and explanation, the teacher's guidance and the students' practice, the students' independent practice and the teacher's checking of their practice, the students' independent practice. In Chapter Ⅳ, the changes before and after its application in their responses and perceptions after reading a storybook were compared and analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods, with a focus on the application result in Chapter Ⅲ, and a conclusion was drawn. In the situation in which although the perspective on a learner or reader and the paradigm for comprehension and appreciation of a storybook are changing from teacher-centeredness to student-centeredness and from knowledge recipient to active meaning constructor, literature classes based on the New Criticism are still being held in actual school settings, the researcher intended to find a solution for reflective practice in the strategy through the research. The research found that the checking of students' perceptions of asking a question and the questions that students generate themselves positively influence their learning about life-time reading method and their internalization of the method in their own manner. Although the research limited its application to elementary school 3rd graders, it will be necessary to expand the research scope to the other graders and develop question types with a consideration of student levels to teach them. And it is necessary to attempt to observe a variety of responses after their reading through methods such as discussing (debating), role-playing, and miming as well as record their post-reading response changes in a response report; and I look forward to research on how to conduct classes including conversations in which they generate questions on the work and try to find answers, the classes focusing on their active communication about their own responses.
