Contemporary advancement of digital technology has led creative thinking in design fields to surpass reality and expand into virtual reality using computer as a tool. As computers are now able to support mathematical and physics computations previously deemed difficult to express, the design process utilizing computer computation is gaining attention. Parametric design is a generative design methodology that is able to derive countless forms and complex patterns created by three-dimensional or 3D modeling programs; it allows for knowledge-based designs composed of creative design concepts as data input for logical computer tools. This study aims to graft the 3D modeling process of biomorphic clothing sculptures, which started out as a concept to imitate nature, onto such parametric design methodologies. Thereby giving body to knowledge-based design algorithms embracing emotional aspect of design and logical characteristics such as rationality and functionality in the field of fashion design. The method of research consisted of theoretical research to explore knowledge-based modeling parameters in biomorphic clothing sculptures applying parametric designs, case studies to clarify its manipulative parameters, and process development of clothing sculptures applying parametric designs. The research was processed via five steps according to parametric design process. During the first step, the study explored knowledge-based data of parametrically designed biomorphic clothing sculptures based on 3D modeling-related industries, knowledge-based designs, parametric methodologies and theories of biomorphic and clothing sculptures, in order to extract parameters for the modeling process of biomorphic clothing sculptures. Results showed that parametric design was mostly utilized in 3D modeling-related industries, especially architecture, and its process consisted of parameters and algorithms. Also, parametric design enabled knowledge-based design, which generates a three-dimensional form from inputs of knowledge data that gives originality to design, such as design concepts and motifs. This study aimed to develop a parametric design process based on the biomorphic characteristics and design components of clothing sculptures. Being the basis of various formative arts, biomorphic images showed reproduction of the subject matter, distorted and modified expressions of natural forms, and free forms both atypical and asymmetrical. Biomorphic characteristics were defined as “dynamism,” “symbolic colors,” “continuity,” “abstraction of living entities,” and “surrealism” according to precedent studies. Clothing sculptures being artistic clothing were classified by form, material and color. In the second step, interrelationships between parameters of selected cases were confirmed based on the knowledge extracted from the first step. In recognition of interrelationships among the components of biomorphic clothing sculptures consisting of form, material and color, this study excluded the unnecessary element of color from item analyses. During the process, for the purpose of manipulating parameters of sub-components based on interrelationships, this study preset the components of clothing sculptures as “silhouette” and “internal composition lines,” while limiting the material to “texture.” As a result, the silhouettes were classified into “fitted silhouette”, “H-line silhouette”, “exaggerated silhouette” and “atypical silhouette,” while texture was analyzed as “intaglio”, “perforation”, “papilla” and “compound texture.” Along with biomorphic characteristics and components of clothing sculptures, biomorphic motifs representing designer’s concepts, and 3D printing production methods and subordinate components of 3D printing materials related to realistic implementations of clothing sculptural forms, were additionally preset as analysis items for knowledge-based data. In the third stage, this study examined correlations between components and their frequency of occurrence by analyzing cases of 3D printing clothing sculptural works with characteristics of biomorphic art dated between 2010 and 2016. The results were as follows. The most frequently occurring biomorphic motifs of clothing sculptures as knowledge-based parameters were plants; their characteristics showed formative decorations applying principles of variability, modification and proportion, and texture featuring leaf vein structures. Dynamism was the most frequently occurring biomorphic characteristic, expressed mainly through repeated lines and life force of organism. Of the clothing sculpture silhouettes in parameters of clothing sculpture modeling, the exaggerated forms were the most frequent; and among types of internal composition line, the hip width was distorted and modified the most. In texture, perforation was the most frequently used expression, and found as perforated patterns printed on flat surfaces, expressions with three-dimensional and variable perforations, patterns with abstract perforation, and pattern imagery of leaf vein structures. Results of analyses on correlation between biomorphic characteristics and components of clothing sculptures are as follows. Exaggerated silhouette and complex texture were witnessed most often in “dynamism”, and exaggerated silhouette and perforated texture in “continuity”, “abstraction of the living entity” and “surrealism.” A noteworthy characteristic in “abstraction of the living entity” was the similar frequencies of atypical silhouette and exaggerated silhouette. In the fourth step, for the purpose of attributing new properties to subordinate materials and obtaining various design outcomes through manipulative parameters, this study confirmed concrete numerical values of formative parameters. Using “exaggerated silhouette” as the most frequently observed silhouette in biomorphic clothing sculptures, they were further classified into “exaggerated shoulder,” “exaggerated shoulder and hip,” “exaggerated waist and hip,” and “exaggerated hip.” During the fifth stage, the study developed a parametric design process of biomorphic clothing sculptures from the knowledge-based data obtained in the previous step. Focusing on “dynamism,” which exhibited the highest frequency among biomorphic characteristics, this study selected “plant motif”, “exaggerated shoulder”, “exaggerated hip” and “perforated texture” to apply constraint conditions to the final parameters. Designer’s concepts used in the development of design were under the theme of “Growth and Extinction of the Living Entity” in attempt to express the process of creation, growth and extinction of plants in one clothing sculpture. The used programs were Rhinoceros and Grasshopper™, and the Voronoi components were employed to generate variable forms with perforated patterns inspired by plants as a motif. By doing so, this study was able to express the selected parameter “dynamism.” The initially completed biomorphic clothing sculpture was revised and supplemented through feedback. By completing the steps listed above, this study obtained the following conclusions. First, all parameters of the parametric design process of biomorphic clothing sculptures allowed free modifications of forms by simply controlling the numerical value of program components to make various forms. Through simulations, outcomes could be confirmed in real time, featuring realistic forms of various patterns reflecting physical traits of the texture. Second, parameters applied to the parametric design process of biomorphic clothing sculptures, as well as created algorithms, could help the data user create new designs and extract various modeling results. Third, the parametric design process of biomorphic clothing sculptures relatively takes more time than design processes in other fields, because it generates algorithms by enumerating data. However, by changing small measurements, it is possible to produce complex forms and patterns in the clothing form with many curves maximizing its artistic value. In conclusion, the construction of algorithms based on the parametric design methodologies can be proposed as a rational process to implement various forms by controlling parameter values. The design process that uses knowledge-based parametric modeling in particular is closely related to human emotions and is expected to become the most optimal method in design, as it minimizes unnecessary time and effort normally needed to arrive at creative designs in areas of fashion which require a high value product.
