The purpose of this study was to develop group music therapy program for adults with developmental disabilities, and to investigate the effects of the program.
This program aims not only to decrease their impulsive-frustration, anxiety, depression-cower, aggression, derealization but also to improve their socialization, self-conception.
The group music therapy program developed in this study is composed of 3 stages: Introduction stage, development stage and finishing stage. The group music therapy program is implemented through a total of 12 sessions, 1 session per week and 40 minutes per session.
In order to verify the effects of the developed programs, the pretest‐posttest design was used. The subjects of this study were 6 adults who participate in daycare center program in Incheon. This completed a kind of questionnaire such as Emotional Behavior Check list(EBS).
Using frequency analysis, percentiles were calculated based on each adult’s 6 teacher report, and Cronbach' α was calculated in order to test internal consistency among the questions of each scale. In addition, paired t‐test was performed to see if each variable was significantly different before and after the programs. Along with these quantitative analyses, each adult’s behavior videotaped during the group music therapy program was also observed and evaluated.
The major results of this study were summarized as follows : According to the differences between pretests and posttests, as to emotional behavior related variables, intervention group showed a significant decrease of impulsive-frustration, anxiety,
depression-cower, aggression and derealization in teacher report after the program. Furthermore, the group showed significant increase in socialization and self-conception after the program.
In conclusion, the intervention programs developed in this study were found to be effective in helping adults with developmental disabilities. This study developed and implemented group music therapy program for adults with developmental disabilities, and found their own effects. The developed intervention programs are meaningful in that they have interventive effects on reducing adults with developmental disabilities negative emotional behavior. Simultaneously, it could also prevent severe problem behaviors that might occur in the future when such behaviors are neglected without any intervention.
Therefore, these programs are expected to be applied as useful materials that could help both the adults with developmental disabilities and their family in community centers and educational institutions.
