This study contributes to the ongoing theological conversation about the Kingdom of God, a main penetrating theme in the whole Bible, by examining the gradual progress of the Kingdom of God in the Book of Daniel. This is an attempt to extend the scope of the previous studies which have been limited to the New Testament. As the chapters go on, the Book of Daniel begins to describe the details of the whole picture of the Kingdom of God presented in the first chapters and progressively reveals new aspects of the Kingdom. This study will research the three sections of the Book of Daniel using exegetical methods.
Chapter 2 most clearly delineates the coming of the Kingdom among chapters 1-6, the first section, as an historical event. The Kingdom of God which will crush all the earthly kingdoms is universal and eternal. The entire process of the establishment of the Kingdom will be under God’s sovereign control. The axis of the whole book, chapter 7, continues the themes of eternal and holy Kingdom that will be established in space and time. Yet the second section suggests that the Kingdom will come after the last judgment. It also discloses the identities of the four beasts destined to be judged and the people who will inherit the Kingdom. The third section, chapters 8-12, explains the fact that the final victory and the consummation of the Kingdom of God will be considerably delayed and what will happen during the delay.
To elaborate its thesis, this study will first predefine the Kingdom of God in the introduction and suggest that the theme in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible has not been studied sufficiently in previous studies. Then it will analyze the texts according to three-fold structure of the book of Daniel through historical, literary, and rhetorical methods, in order to explore the aspects of the gradual progress of the Kingdom. Further connotation of the study as well as the summary will be indicated in the conclusion.
