The purpose of this study is to understand the career decision making process of vocational high school graduates who experienced work-first-then-to-college program. Based on the object of this study, the following research goals were made; first, did the vocational coursework affect the career decision for the vocational high school students? Second, did the vocational high school graduates have profession choices and college major related to the high school major in the career decision process? Third, what is the significance of work-first-then-to-college program during the career change process? Fourth, as an graduate who experienced work-first-then-to-college program and had a change in career by going to higher education, I adopted qualitative research methods to deeply comprehend and understand the participants. In order to find out how the experience of career decision making during the work-first-then-to-college program influenced them, and whether it had a meaningful significance, qualitative methods were used and the research questions were set up as follows. First, what is the career decision process of the vocational high school graduates like? Second, what is the significance of work-first-then-to-college program for the vocational high school graduates in career decision process? With these research problems, participants' career decision making process was studied. The five participants in the study were graduates of vocational high schools in the commercial sector and in-depth interviews were conducted of them. From mid-February to early May of 2017, two individual face-to-face interviews and one individual telephone interview was conducted for each participant. Face-to-face interviews with participants were conducted over a period of two hours, one hour per session, and additional confirmation was made through telephone interviews. To enhance the reliability of the research, the results were collected using anticipated questionnaires, observation logs, transcripts and scripts, and also previous researches, policies and systems were collected to analyzed and derive the accurate results using open coding. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the selection of a vocational high school due to the low level of academic achievement. Second, selecting a vocational high school by suggestion or advice of close associates. Third, until middle school, there was a lack of interest and aptitude of one self, however, interest and aptitude were found through specialized course works in a vocational high school. Fourth, the dream for college entrance suspended due to family circumstances. Each one of them wished to proceed to a college but their dreams were held back by family circumstances. Fifth, fulfilling a hope for a job that has better conditions than a high school graduate job through entering college, or to raise professionalism in one's field. Sixth, the high level of satisfaction of the work-first-then-to-college program. Participants in this study showed a positive response and a satisfaction with the work-first-then-to-college program, and through it, their self-esteem was also increased. The conclusion of the study obtained from the analysis results is; first, vocational high school students' career decision process can be varied according to the search for oneself and the surrounding environment. Second, work-first-then-to-college program provided self-development and boost of self-esteem for the vocational high school graduates in the course of career decision process and starting a new future.
