The effect of debate education on the change of perception on the future value of agriculture and rural communities : focusing on students from 5th to 7th grades원문보기

Agriculture and rural communities sustain our nation's survival and health beyond industrial value. It also plays a central role in national development that provides multiple functions and public values to the general public. However, the rapid urban development resulted in the rapid exodus of people from rural areas, and agriculture and rural communities collapsed as domestic agricultural products market and dinning tables were filled with cheaper imported agricultural products amid the spread of FTA. The necessity and importance of value cognition education for teenagers on agriculture and rural communities is derived from this background. The current value perception education for youths is limited in bringing about changes in their value perception of agriculture and rural communities in educational methods. To change the value perception, firstly, a wealth of information about the relevant knowledge should be provided; secondly, there should be no stereotypes or negative prejudices; thirdly, the objects should be educated so that cognitive values lead to their philosophy and consciousness as to be reflected in decision making. The infused literacy education on agriculture and rural communities conducted in school shows a limit in solving stereotypes or negative prejudices. And the field trip education has a problem in that it does not offer a chance to acquire abundant relevant knowledge. In an alternative way, this study tests the effect of debate education on the change of value perception of agriculture and rural communities. It was conducted based on the hypotheses that the education on agriculture and rural communities through debate would foster voluntary research on abundant related knowledge, lead to a positive value perception of agriculture and rural communities, and be reflected in making the decision of the future career path. The subjects of this study are students from 5th to 7th grades, generally known as being in a career exploration period, and the possibility of change of value perception was measured through debate education and questionnaire. The subjects were selected from schools in urban, rural, and urban rural complex areas so as not to be concentrated in one particular area. The change of value perception was measured respectively after two different groups - one participating in debate education and another non participating group - answered a questionnaire on the future value of agriculture and rural communities. Through this experiment, we examined i) the level of value perception of agriculture and rural communities among the subjects, ii) if change of value perception occurred in the participating group, and iii) thus, debate education would be able to change teenagers’ decision on their future career path, and their behavior, all in the aspect of strengthening national competitiveness. Debate education was conducted in a way students participating in a ‘game-style’ debate on the subject that 'The development of agriculture and rural communities should be put ahead of everything in the era of 4th industrial revolution.' The result of this study shows that the average level of increase in the interest in agriculture and rural communities was 4.60 out of 5.0, and the understanding effect of the value of agriculture and rural communities was 4.61 out of 5.0, both showing a very positive evaluation over 4.50. In addition, the level of intention to participate in a rural field trip after debate education was very high with the average of 4.43 and the standard deviation of 5.79, indicating debate education meaningfully influenced teenagers’s behavioral change. This suggests that education on agriculture and rural communities through debate has a great influence on the change of value perception and, thus, it could be used as a supplementary educational method for literacy education and field trip learning.
