Adolescents’ efforts to discover the means of protecting themselves from personal and social problems and risks must be as hard but worthwhile as treasure-hunting. However, education in South Korea fails to provide adolescents with any map or compass to find the treasures. It not only pays little attention to the establishment of values to be acquired in adolescence but also does not so actively help them cultivate ability to overcome and recover from any problem situation for themselves. Recently, lots of research on ‘resilience,’ as a way of adolescents’ fulfilling given tasks in their life successfully, has been conducted. Resilience refers to individuals’ ability to cope actively and flexibly with and overcome any risky problem situation. Research on resilience in adolescence is on the quantitative increase. However, most studies have inefficiently been conducted with the same, fragmented themes repetitively in similar ways and no comprehensive conclusion concerning the actual degree of the influence of resilience in different areas has been drawn. The purpose of this study was to perform meta-analysis, which involved systematic literature review regarding the effects of resilience in adolescence and quantitative integration, and determine the effect size of the variables related to resilience in adolescence. It aimed to present basic data that could help develop practical programs and policies concerning adolescents’ resilience in school and home education and counseling practice as well as in social welfare practice for adolescents on the basis of the objectively validated results. For this purpose, a total of 233 articles—171 master’s and doctor’s theses and 62 articles in journals—which were published in South Korea for the past 18 years from 1998 to 2016 were analyzed to indicate the effect size of the variables which facilitated resilience in adolescence and those which inhabited it and determine the differences in the effect size among the variables by age. One of the notable results from this study was that personal and social variables among those facilitating resilience in adolescence had greater effect sizes than any other variable. This result demonstrates that personal characteristics and social support play important roles in resilience in adolescence. Of the personal variables facilitating resilience in adolescence, sociality had a greater effect size than any other variable. To improve resilience in adolescence, therefore, it is necessary to actively develop activity programs for improving social support as well as programs for improving social skills, taking their personal characteristics into account. Of the family variables facilitating resilience in adolescence, family areas and family support had great effect sizes. This result demonstrates that among various environmental factors, positive parenting attitude and family support play important roles in promoting resilience in adolescence. It is also necessary to make good cooperation and association with parents or family at school. It was health status that had the greatest effect size among the personal variables inhibiting resilience in adolescence. Adolescence is characterized by the beginning of puberty when they may not only have difficulty in adapting themselves to their own physical changes but also suffer from physical defects or personality-related problems and have their health damaged by stress from the exposure to the pressure from the educational and social environments. It is therefore necessary to conduct further research on the effects of resilience as well as on health status in adolescence. When the general effect size of the variables facilitating resilience in adolescence was analyzed in terms of age, elementary school children had the greatest effect size. Elementary school age is characterized by some important tasks, including diligence and peer relation development. The failure to develop these factors properly can cause them to have difficulty with adjustment, which can directly lead to problems in adolescence. Therefore, it is crucial to improve resilience, which is an ability to cope flexibly with hardships and conditions and adapt oneself to them. Middle school students had a medium effect size of poor parenting and care among the family variables inhibiting resilience in adolescence. Middle school age is characterized by the developmental tasks, such as emotional independence and positive self-concept formation, and the failure to fulfill these tasks successfully in family relations can not only cause depression, tension, anxiety, and a feeling of inferiority but also lead to sex problems, alcohol intake, smoking, drug addiction, and problems with mental health. It is therefore necessary to improve the family environment and support family through parent education so that middle school students can fulfill developmental tasks successfully.
