This study aimed to examine changes of structural characteristics and constructional techniques by period in the ancient stone-built mountain fortresses of the Honam Province. Most ancient stone-built mountain fortresses are located at a place that may satisfy both military and administrative purposes at the same time. As a requisite for fulfilling them above, Baekje mountain fortress seems to have favored 200m of the relative height(比高) and this study identified that it went up relatively in the United Silla period. As a result of estimating functions of stone-built mountain fortresses based on their relative height, scale and type, they may be classified into 4 groups. Group 1 (scale under 300m, relative height 165~315) was constructed higher than topography around so has a strong characteristic of a fort for surveillance of a visible area and early response. Group 2(scale under 300~1,000m, relative height 25~321m) has a Temoe-styled Maanbong(馬鞍峰) type generally and mainly may be assumed as Zhìsuǒ-seong at county and township. Group 3 is a large-scaled mountain fortress over 1,000m but has a relative height to 60m so is easy to access from a residence. Since the initial construction in the period of three states, it had performed administrative ․military functions as a regional Base Fortress(據點城) until the period of Joseon Dynasty. Group 4, like Group 3, is a large-scaled mountain fortress with a higher relative height of 125~300m. Mountain fortresses are located at the rear of a residence and may be assumed as a background mountain fortress of Zhìsuǒ(背後山城) or for protection in a fortress. Transitions of structural characteristics and constructional techniques in the ancient stone-built mountain fortresses may be classified into 3 periods. Firstly, as for the city walls in the period Ⅰ, random stone work(in the mid 6th century) and a constructional technique using processed stone may be identified at periodic intervals and there is a case showing both at the same time. Stylobate extension was mainly done with clay but its scale varied as topographic conditions. As for fortress gates, Pyeongmun was primarily used including Eogeutmun and a Hyeonmun-style was also identified like Baengnyeong Sanseong. Sidewall fore-ends of the opening show difference in each mountain fortress but have a characteristic of rounding. Chiseong was constructed with a technique identical to that of a city wall, mostly putting it over the city wall. As for a collecting reservoir, mainly clay-collecting reservoirs were constructed around a building site and a city wall, and Ⅱ-type was highly used for stone-built collecting reservoirs. Mokgwakgo was found out from Baengnyeong Sanseong and assumed as water storage facilities for drinking and living. Drainage facilities for a collecting reservoir were constructed with the wall penetrate type(conduit +water shaft). The noteworthy thing is that recently at Baekchiseong an archetype of a drainage system connected to the outside from the city wall was founded out. As for a building site, a Pillar-Wall building attracts attention as the representative material culture of Baekje central region at Geomdan Sanseong and a polygonal building is assumed as a watchtower when considering its location. In the period Ⅱ, foundation stone was installed to the base of the city wall and the range work of processed stone was generalized. Construction methods of the base varied from Ⅰ to Ⅳ types and the structural stability of the city wall was promoted by constructing grounding stone of the top of foundation stone inward. As a result, stylobate extension was scaled down compared with the past. Donggo Sanseong showing such fortification holds a significant position in setting the chronology of the period Ⅱ. The outer walls of Donggo Sanseong adopted a typical construction technique for castles during the United Silla period. Such an aspect may be identified from every section including city walls and gates so it is resonable to regard as the city wall constructed initially between the end of the 7th and the early 8th centuries. A fortress gate was set up at the central and side of a valley and use of Hyeonmun increased. Besides, there are may cases that Pyeongmun established in the period Ⅰ was closed and it was replaced with Hyeonmun. At the fortress gate, it is possible to see Hwaksoe(確金)+Sinsoe(靴金) for opening and closing, iron ware for locking a fortress gate and Munhwakseok. Besides, pumice was processed to the floor and a drainageway was installed to the side wall. Chiseong(雉城) was added to the diffracted section of the fortress wall facing a ridge or constructed at the same time. In particular, Bongdae Sanseong was constructed from the beginning to interlock with the fortress wall. As for Bukdongchi disadvantageous topographically, stone larger than Seongdol was installed to each corner and made to position at the junction of lower Seongdol by adjusting the length whenever raising a platform. Furthermore, the base was constructed in a tiered manner and the side wall was processed with reversed inclination for stability. The northern gate of Donggo Sanseong is Eogeutmun. It was reconstructed to Hyeonmun and simultaneously facilities for going up a fortress were installed for convenience of passage. Its construction technique is similar to that of Gosaburiseong so it is assumed that fortification of Baekje was handed down. A collecting reservoir shows V-type(plane-round, section-tiered, construction technique-range work) and Ⅵ-type(plane-rectangular, section-inclined, construction technique-range work). In particular, water collecting facilities at Jangsu, Chimnyeong Sanseong belonging to V-type have a finishing characteristic laying long rectangular stone for the top side of each platform with tiered Byeokseok. It is regarded that many efforts were made for constructing a collecting reservoir in that it is located at the top region within the fortress and has Jugongyeol around Byeokseok and a pulley maybe used for opening and closing the sluice. In case of Gosaburiseong of Ⅵ-type. a reed mat, seems to have the principle identical to that of the leaf mat method, was identified on the floor and Maro Sanseong seems to cut surface water and soil surging rapidly by stone-circling around the collecting reservoir. As for a building site, there are characteristic stone-walled buildings mainly found out from Zhìsuǒ-seong at county and township in the United Silla period and they are assumed for a warehouse. However, in case of Donggo Sanseong, there is a case that they are located near the city wall so may have a different function. The archetypes of city wall and subsidiary facilities of the period Ⅲ are not found out yet. However, cases at Gyeongnam region show that large stone was positioned at the lower part of the outer city wall and it was not constructed at a steep slope with combined construction techniques.
