As the e-book service of a public library is expanded due to the generalization of mobile environment and the development of e-book market, the hybrid user group using both p-books and e-books is established. Given that they may play an crucial role in altering newly the reading media of a public library and expanding the reading population, they deserve to be in the spotlight. Accordingly, this study tries to devise an activation plan of the hybrid user group by analyzing the use pattern of hybrid users through circulation records for p-books and e-books of 3 public libraries located in Incheon Metropolitan City. The results of this study can be summarized as follow. First, the ratio of hybrid users to total ones who borrow p-books or e-books more than once in 3 public libraries of Incheon Metropolitan City is 3.6%. That of p-book and e-book only users is respectively 50.2% and 46.2%, indicating that the former is higher than the latter. Second, considering demographic characteristics of hybrid users, the proportion of female is 21% greater than that of male. In addition, females show also higher proportion in the total use of p-book and e-book only users. In terms of an age-specific rate, the proportion of hybrid users in their 30s and 40s is 68.8%, appearing to be high. In the case of p-book only users, the highest proportion is observed in the 40s age group, but all ages show evenly 20%. In the case of e-book only users, two age groups of 30s and 40s account for 66.3%. Third, the proportion of hybrid users who start to use p-book and e-book in the same year and who access to the e-book service after using p-books is 86.8%. However, 13.2% of them borrow p-books within 3 years after borrowing e-books. These results demonstrate that the e-book service have an influence on the inflow of library members to use p-books. Fourth, given the ratio of borrowing to the membership composition proportion of hybrid and only users, females are noticeable in both groups in using p-book and e-book. Moreover, in terms of an age-specific borrowing rate, hybrid users are active in their 40s in using p-book, and only users are active in their 10s or less. In using e-book, both groups are significant in 40s age. Fifth, in accordance with the annual average number of borrowed books of hybrid and only users per person, the p-book use of hybrid users is 23.6 books and the e-book use 32.9, showing higher frequency compared to p-book only users (19.1) and e-book only users (17.9), respectively. Sixth, considering the use pattern by subject of hybrid and only users in the p-book use, both groups show the high proportion of borrowing books related to literature and social science, and the subject preference is similar to each other. In the use pattern by the book field, only users borrow often children's books and their use rate is shown to be high in 10s or less and 40s age. It is considered that this high proportion of the 40s age group in borrowing children's books is attributed to their reading activity. However, hybrid users show the high use rate in their 30s and 40s, and borrow more often general books rather than children's ones. These results reveal that hybrid users are an active group to read books. Seventh, in using e-books, the subject preference of hybrid and only users is similar to each other, but the borrowing rate of genre literature is high in the latter and the former show the preference in a variety of fields including it. As elucidated in these results, the annual average number of borrowed books per person appears to be high in hybrid users who emerge owing to the e-book service of a public library. Considering the quantitative and qualitative features of library use such as reading activity for theirselves and access to various subjects or fields, they may be regarded as an active user group. Therefore, it is thought that further efforts are required to lead only users of a public library into hybrid users. In this regard, it is crucial to develop a diversity of programs including public relations, education, and event capable of raising awareness and accessibility for the p-book and e-book media.
