Purpose of this study was to identify the effects of conflictual independence, self-soothing and adaptation in college life on the parent-child relationship of early adulthood and to use the study results as the basic data for family life education to improve the relationship between the parents and college student children who were not living with their parents. Subjects of this study were targeting 257 college students who were not living with their parents and collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 23.0 program. Main results of this study are as follows. First, regarding the overall tendency of the relationship between the parents and college student children, ‘gratitude‘ to father was 4.22 and that to mother was 4.30.'indebtedness’ to father 4.06 and that to mother 4.13, ‘intimacy’ with father was 3.48 and that with mother was 3.71, ‘respect’ to father was 4.04 and that to mother was 4.19. Regarding the ‘conflict’ indicating the negative emotions between parents and children, ‘conflict” with father was 1.85 and that with mother was 1.87, which showed lower levels than the other variables.
Regarding the conflictual independence showed was 2.31 points with father and 2.29 with mother. Regarding sub-variables, self-soothing showed 4.87, self-disclosure showed 4.83, physical soothing showed 4.80 and resilience showed 4.49 points respectively. Lastly, regarding the adaptation to college life, academic adaptation showed 4.78, social adaptation showed 3.43, physical adaptation showed 3.21 and attachment to college showed 3.35 points respectively. Second, regarding the relationship between the variables related to the parent-child relationship of college students, the variables which showed statistically positive correlation with ‘gratitude’ in parent-children relationship were resilience, physical soothing, self-disclosure, self-soothing, social, emotional and physical adaptation and attachment to college, and the negative correlation was conflictual independence. The variables showing positive correlation with 'indebtedness’ were social and physical adaptation and attachment to college, and conflictual independence showed negative correlation. 'Intimacy' showed a positive correlation with resilience, self-disclosure, self-soothing, social, emotional and physical adaptation and attachment to college and conflictual independence showed negative correlation. Regarding 'conflict', only conflictual independence showed positive correlation, and negative correlations were identified in resilience, self-disclosure, self-soothing, social, emotional, physical adaptation and attachment to college. Regarding ‘respect’, positive correlation was identified in resilience, physical soothing, self-disclosure, self-soothing, social, emotional, physical adaptation and attachment to college, and conflictual independence showed negative correlation. Third, regarding the study results about relative influences that college students related variables affect the parent-children relationship, overall explanatory power of ‘gratitude’ in parent-children relationship showed 21.9% to father and 19.7% to mother. In related variables, ‘gratitude’ to father was identified higher as conflictual independence is low, attachment to college is higher, subjective economic level is higher and the father has brothers. And, ‘gratitude’ to mother was identified higher, as conflictual independence and emotional adaptation are lower and subjective economic level is higher. Explanatory power of ‘intimacy’ in parent-children relationship is 31.5% with father and 24.6% with mother. Significant influencing variables of father and mother showed low conflictual independence. As the social adaptation was higher, ‘intimacy’ with parents was identified to be higher. Regarding the study results about relative influences on ‘conflict’ in parent-children relationship, explanatory power was identified 22.9% with father and 23.0% with mother respectively. Regarding variables related both to father and mother, higher conflictual independence with parents was identified in the cases of boarding and lodging. ‘Respect’ in parent-children relationship was identified 28.7% to father and 27.6% to mother. Regarding the significant influencing variables to father, ‘respect’ to father was higher as conflictual independence and emotional adaptation were lower, subjective economic level was higher, the grade was lower and the subjects had brother. ‘Respect’ to mother was higher as the subjects had lower conflictual independence and emotional adaptation and higher subjective economic level and education level of the parents and were lower grade students. There is a meaning in that this study showed that conflictual independence, self-soothing and college life adaptation have affected the parent-children relationship of early adulthood children and that the study results could be used as the basic data in family life education to improve parent-children relationship.
