Innovations in technology, particularly in digital media sector, are significantly changing the way people think and communicate. Accordingly, children who are exposed to internet media from their birth, often called digital natives, are experiencing changes in their perception and attitudes for education while learning through variety of digital media, breaking away from the several decades-succeeded traditional way of studying in the classroom. However, in such environment, it is necessary to grasp the reality of the situation because when the digital divide(information gap) between households' income or education level gets further intensified, it may result in low-income children being relatively excluded or less previleged. In this study, the low-income families’ parents, children and caregiver teachers were involved as research participants to explore their perceptions about multimedia-in-education as well as the alternative media education based on Vilém Flusser's technical image and kommunikologie, and Dieter Baacke's medienkompetenz. On the basis of Flusser’s ideal form of society which pursues dialogical communication and Telematik era involving consistent bidirectional interactions, this study examined how children who experienced multimedia education perceive and react to it. In addition, the study looked at the directivity of alternative media-in-education in order to pursue more behavior oriented media education based on Baacke’s theory. The purpose of this study is to provide the usefulness of media teaching method by studying the perception of parents and caregiver teachers in terms of inducing children’s interest about learning and academic achievements. For this purpose, this study was conducted on the children aged 10 or older who have experienced learning by multimedia devices over 3 months in low-income families and their parents and the teachers at the local care centers, and they were interviewed through the focus group interview (FGI) and in-depth interview. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: First, the motivation of using multimedia education and the scope of utilization were both highly influenced by the living environment and parents’ role. Parents had a psychological expectation that the children would supplement the lack of school education by multimedia education, and they also considered the low cost ratio compared to the private education in general through the institutes with face-to-face lessons. Second, most of the children who are familiar with digital devices are satisfied with various contents of multimedia education and its interactive way, and therefore their interests about learning as well as their academic achievement have increased. The children were furthermore coordinating their own programs in terms of media competence and they were advancing the capabilities even towards creative activities. These results led to positive satisfaction for parents, but on the other hand, there were concerns about deterioration of vision and media addiction for long - time use of multimedia devices, so they were taking an ambivalent position. Third, as the parents who are the key decision makers are not familiar with the digital environment and are keeping the position of the protective point of view about media education, the solution needs to be handled at the national level supporting their media education. Finally, the ideal form of Telematik society with media competence which Flusser and Baacke aimed at can only be achieved when the fundamental structure of education, the fixed frame of one-way flow of knowledge or information transfer, gets changed. In conclusion, this study has significance for that it thoroughly provides the changes in perceptions and behaviors of children and their guardians related to multimedia-in-education instead of stating dichotomous perception that multimedia education is right or wrong, and its significance also lies in that the study steps forward to examine the progressive direction of media education for the future. Since developed social media can bring positive changes in variety of fields such as providing children wide range of outlook for the world, driving the desire of participation and access, and motivating media production or creation by themselves, there remain some important tasks such as research & development of appropriate media education curriculums which can be carried out from early years of children and also the study of right way of supporting the social alienation class considering their environments and conditions in order to achieve social integration.
