The current dissertation studies the creative materials used in Korean animated TV shows produced from 1987 to 1993, as a research of animated film history. The current study looks into Korean animated TV films created in this time frame in order to identify the Korean socio-cultural context they contain, and interpret the reflected Korean materials in the works, thereby reaching an understanding about the historical significance of TV animation at the time in Korea. In particular, the current study emphasizes that reflecting the Korean characteristics in the process of creation can work to differentiate animated films and make them more competitive.
The term Korean in the current study is not used synonymously as the term Korean identity. The term Korean is used to refer to clearly reveal the unique characteristics of Korean creative animated films as opposed to foreign animated films (Japanese ones, in particular) that began to be broadcasted in 1967.
When Korea began hosting large-scale international events in the 1980s, the TV animation industry in Korea began voicing their concerns about animated TV shows broadcasted at the time, which were mostly foreign. In response, the government began encouraging Korean studios to produce animated TV shows. As such, the direction of Korean animated TV show creation aligns with the national policy objectives, which sought to demonstrate the national standing of Korea and display the superiority of its national culture.
The current study establishes this time as the transitional period for Korean animated TV shows, as it is when Korean TV stations, which previously aired foreign animated TV shows, began broadcasting original animated TV shows made in Korea. The features of animated TV shows during this transitional period is that they struggled to show their unique characteristics different from foreign animated TV shows which were actively imported and aired in the market. The current study views such features of original Korean animated TV shows, produced based on the social demands, display the reflection of Korean materials. In order to analyze such a feature, the current study approached the subject from two aspects of 1) reflection of the concurrent Korean society in the “dailiness” of the animated TV shows and 2) creation with the traditional culture as a motif.
In analyzing the “dailiness of Korean in the 1980s,” the first feature displayed in animated TV shows during the transitional period, the current study looks at how the problems caused by political dominance and rapid economic growth were reflected in the creative products. Defining the “discovery of dailiness” as an aspect of reflecting Korean material is a meaningful attempt: While there were some animated feature films shown in theaters attempted such an approach in the past, it is meaningful that animated films and shows, which mostly focused on adventures and explorations to the space and unknown worlds, began featuring stories from daily life that can Korean children could easily encounter. The second aspect is creation with the traditional culture as a motif, which is limited in that the animated TV shows at the time only superficially approached the traditional culture, rather than making profound re-interpretations of the traditional culture with consideration for its uniqueness and identity. However, it is meaningful in that such an attempt is the first of many to contain the symbols and unique cultural characteristics that Korean traditional culture has into the platform of animated TV shows.
The current study establishes that the reflection of Korean materials is a characteristic of Korean animated TV shows during the transitional period, and made analyses of works from that era. In this process, the current study recognizes that using Korean materials was a meaningful attempt, but also points out that there were limitations of only superficially and formally applying the cultural materials in the animated works. The production of Korean animated TV shows, which began in 1987, was a positive opportunity that settled the broadcasting of animated TV shows on color TV, which was the popular media platform under most attention. In addition, it is significant in that it is the first attempt to produce Korean animated shows with Korean materials that are different from foreign animated TV shows. However, it is regrettable that such a positive first attempt was not able to develop further in varied discussions and reviews, only to die out in the expansion of a discourse for globalization. While this first attempt disclosed many limitations, the reflection of Korean materials will serve as the key to Korean animation securing a unique identity in the future.
The reflection of Korean materials in animated films creates unique characteristics for Korean products, differentiates them with foreign animated works, improves the aesthetic value of Korean animated films, in addition to other positive effects. The current study also suggests several ways to reflect Korean materials in the creative process of animated films, in order to expand their uniqueness and creativity.
