The main goal of this study is to analyze the characteristics of orality and the oral culture in new media through Walter Ong’s theory of orality. Orality is the most anthropocentric tool of human communication. According to Ong, orality can be divided into primary and secondary orality. Primary orality is an oral culture that is developed based only on orality with no literacy or text. This study focuses on Homer, who was the major rhapsodists of his time, to analyze primary orality. It also focuses on primary orality by analyzing the formulas, which was the way rhapsodists composed poems and the way they made it memorable without any prior knowledge of texts. This study focuses further on the culture that relies on the hearing abilities based on what orality is namely, voice and speaking skills. To analyze secondary orality, this study first analyzes Plato who was the first to deal with changes in media when the culture shifted from orality to writing. It also focuses on what is known as the very first media criticism, which is Plato’s criticism of writing, and discusses Plato’s statement that ‘writing is a pharmakon’. we discuss changes in one’s thinking system caused by writing and focus on the characteristics of literacy. Literacy and writing changed people’s life style from dependence on hearing to dependence on visualizing. The printing culture which follows later further made visualizing more dominant than hearing. Printing culture achieves a mechanical system for the first time as a communication tool. Electronics culture which comes after is also based on mechanics and therefore has similar characteristics. This thesis explores these facts and discusses the meanings of changes that mechanical system brings to secondary orality. This thesis also focuses on the new media which bases its characteristics on a wide scope of networking system in internet, and examine if it has enough qualities to form an oral culture. The new media brought new ideas that did not exist in the past. Collective intelligence is one of them. This study analyzes the collective intelligence that was discussed by Pierre Levy, and analyzes the new media’s environment that made this possible. New media carries different orality from the secondary orality that electronic culture showed. This can be found especially in social media news and snack culture. This study focuses on the snack culture which is one of the main characteristics of the new media contents. The distinct characteristics of primary orality can be found during the creation and communication process in snack culture. This study discusses how these affected orality in new media. News in social media shows conversing and narrative characteristics. This is something that is completely different from previous characteristics in orality and can be said that it is closer to primary orality than secondary orality. In conclusion, it shows that the orality in new media does not represent secondary orality but rather inherits the characteristics of primary orality.
