As the population is ageing rapidly in Korea and China, the discussions on the elderly is increasing. Especially, age and gender discrimination against aged women is one of them. The mass media interacts with society to make an ideology and is influenced by the own ideology to make up a new one. According to proceeding research analysis, the mass media have reproduced biased view towards aged women, but it shows that there are new ways of depicting aged women these days. Therefore, this study aims to study the protagonists of Korean film and Chinese remake film , who are aged women determined to satisfy suppressed desires. Using Chatman’s narrative analysis, this study shows how aged women in Korean and Chinese society are represented in the films, and what this representation signifies. Narrative analysis results show that the body of aged women is depicted as a symbol of bad shape from an aesthetic point of view in . Meanwhile, in , it shows the aged women who care about their health and who are proud of it, but her healthiness is represented as maternal instinct. As such, both films show misogyny, and it overlaps with preexisting media in the perspective of taking women’s aging negatively. However, when these films show men’s dilemma, wanting an ideal woman with a young body, but with elderly wisdom, each of these films takes different position. While stresses the maternity as the main condition of attractive woman, challenges the preexisting way of describing aged women by stressing the importance of inner value and changing the ideal image of women to socialistic women who are progressive mature. Moreover, patriarchal attitudes towards women are shown in the film by setting antagonistic relationship between the protagonist and the other women characters. However, the protagonist and the her female family members reconcile relationship in the end, and especially the change of the daughter-in-law’s attitude towards the protagonist is interesting. While the daughter-in-law tries to have a candid conversation with the protagonist to subvert the patriarchy in , the daughter-in-law makes peace by starting to embrace and respect the protagonist as the elders, and it result in family unity in . Lastly, each of the films shows different ways of showing the love of elderly women. shows limits by creating a romantic relationship between an active man and a passive woman and depicting women as the weak who need to be saved by men, typical narrative of salvation. Still, it shows new imagination about romantic relationship between an aged woman and a young man which deviates from preexisting custom. maximizes the feature of ‘sinpa’ itself by showing the choice of protagonist choosing maternal instinct over romantic relationship. Thus it shows the limitation where it shows women living in a patriarchal society, and yet it also shows reflectivity which reveals the suppression suffered by aged women. Likewise, since each films reflects the social attitude and ideology in each society, both of the films follow an old tradition by showing the limited ways of illustrating aged women, but they also attempt to make changes to extend their imagination to depict aged women. However, they still fails to show aged women fulfilling the true desire but only shows oppressing desire for maternal instinct. Despite these films, independent aged women who fulfills their desire are increasing in real life. Thus mass media must reflect the fact that there are increasing number of such active aged women and suggest proper role models so that it could overwrite the distorted perception.
