In 2012, South Korea's Ministry of Education and Science Technology established multi-cultural preparatory schools in elementary, middle and high schools nationwide to provide multi-cultural youth, especially immigrant youth, with intensive education in Korean language and culture before being placed in regular schools. The establishment of multi-cultural preparatory schools is a measure to ensure that the immigrant youth have fewer difficulties adapting to Korean public schools. The research that has been carried out regarding multi-cultural preparatory schools can be divided into three studies: 1. studies on Korean as a Second Language(KSL) curriculum, 2. studies on the adaptation of immigrant youth to school, and 3. the experiences of the homeroom teachers and multi-cultural language instructors at the multi-cultural preparatory schools. However, there have been no studies on Korean Language teachers who directly teach KSL curriculum to immigrant youth at the multi-cultural preparatory schools. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate in depth the experience of Korean language teachers in elementary multi-cultural preparatory school and to clarify the meaning and essence of the experience. In addition, this study focused on providing the information and materials needed to improve Korean education in public schools through an in depth understanding of the experiences of Korean language teachers in elementary multi-cultural preparatory school. To accomplish this purpose, this study tried to answer the following questions: First, what is the experience of Korean language teachers who are working at elementary multi-cultural preparatory schools? Second, what is the experience of school life teaching students in elementary multi-cultural preparatory schools? Third, what is the treatment of Korean teachers working in elementary multi-cultural preparatory schools? In order to answer these questions in this study, narrative interviews were conducted with six people who are working as Korean language teachers at elementary multi-cultural preparatory schools in Seoul. The major findings from this study can be summarized as follows: First, in relation to the Korean language teachers' experiences in Korean language teaching, it was shown that students were taught together regardless of their Korean language ability. Even though the students learn together, they use different textbooks and content. Eventually, Korean classes would have to be individualized. Second, in relation to the Korean language teachers' experiences in school life teaching; most of the students were immigrant youth who came to Korea by their parents' decision, and most of them experienced parental divorce and remarriage. Because of these factors, the students were often psychologically disturbed and often did not have the will or motivation to study. For these reasons, all the teachers of elementary multi-cultural preparatory schools seemed responsible to care for these students. In particular, the homeroom teachers were crucial in providing understanding and consolation. Third, in relation to the treatment of Korean language teachers working in multi-cultural preparatory schools, the unstable employment status and poor treatment were directly or indirectly influencing Korean language instruction. In particular, most Korean teachers were hired by the schools to work less than 15 hours per week in order to avoid paying holidays and providing insurance. The damage caused by this resulted in a decrease in student's opportunities for Korean language classes.
