추측 표현의 한중 대응 양상 연구 A Study on Correspondence Patterns between Korean Speculative Expressions to its Chinese Equivalents: Focusing on Korean-Chinese Parallel Corpus원문보기

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the significance and methods of usage of Korean speculative expressions by showing how they semantically and morphologically correspond to Chinese modal auxiliary verbs in Korean and Chinese parallel corpuses. The reason why this study examines Korean speculative expressions is that “speculations” on unknown situations in human consciousness or activities play an important function in determining human actions. They also diversely appear from beginning to advanced Korean language education levels and deal with important content. Moreover, they present more difficulties to learners of Korean as their range is more diverse than modal expressions of other languages (in this case, Chinese). Thus, there is a need to recognize differences in the use of speculative expressions according the types or objectivity/subjectivity of situations and contexts, i.e., the basis of speculations, and their degrees of certainty, as well as demonstrate which speculative expressions are used based on these factors. The second chapter of this study addresses modal categories in Korean and Chinese, speculative modalities, criteria for analyzing the semantic meaning of speculations, and a theoretical discussion of Korean and Chinese speculative expressions. The third chapter examines which Chinese expressions correspond to the Korean speculative expressions {-ul kesita}, {-ul kes kathta}, {-gess-}, {-ul deutada}, {-ulji moreuda}, {-ulgga boda}, {-ul teoida}, {-na/neunga boda}, and {-ul moyangida}. First, although Korean speculative expressions are grammatical clauses, Chinese grammatical clauses and lexical clauses can both show speculation. Chinese modal auxiliary verbs, which are grammatical clauses, show both objectivity and subjectivity, but are primarily objective. Thus, this study took them as the baseline for analysis of correspondence patterns. When comparing the proportions of Chinese modal auxiliary verbs and lexical clauses that correspond to Korean speculative expressions respectively, the study gauged the degrees of objectivity/subjectivity in Korean speculative expressions respectively, and arranged the degrees of objectivity/subjectivity in Korean speculative expressions. Moreover, it arranged the semantic properties of Korean speculative expressions through the semantic properties of Chinese expressions that corresponded to Korean speculative expressions. The fourth chapter examines the degrees of certainty, degrees of subjectivity, and whether there are reasons behind basis of speculations in Korean expressions through a semantic analysis of Chinese modal auxiliary verbs corresponding to Korean speculative expressions. First, although there were various Chinese modal auxiliary verb clauses corresponding to Korean speculative expressions, these were categorized based on their degrees of certainty as follows: modal verbs of necessity (highest degree of certainty), modal verbs of probability (medium degree of certainty), and modal verbs of possibility (lowest degree of certainty). The dictionary forms of the modal auxiliary verbs which appeared the most frequently were presented, as well as each of their proportions and frequencies. Second, although the Chinese modal auxiliary verbs corresponding to Korean speculative showed similar degrees of certainty, the study discerned differences in their usage compared to Korean speculative forms as the former have unique semantic characteristics. Third, the Chinese modal auxiliary verbs corresponding to Korean speculative expressions such as {-ul kesita}, {-ul kes kathta}, {-gess-}, {-ul deutada} also corresponded to the [-insik (epistemic)] modality. That is, they also corresponded to deontic modality or dynamic modality. Although speculation is their primary method of usage, this demonstrates that they sometimes are indirectly used to express duty, permission, or ability. The fifth chapter mainly examines how factors such as [direct sensual experience] or [outside information] affect the basis of speculations in the context of example sentences through a semantic analysis. Analyzing the subjectivity and objectivity of the basis of speculations, and their unexpectedness and improbability, allowed us to infer the relationship between the basis of speculation and degree of certainty in Korean speculative expressions. Moreover, the study found that bases of speculation can overlap, and examined cases where they not presented. The sixth chapter summarizes the content of the study and discusses its limits and future opportunities for research.
