PKPCT(Power as knowing Participating in Change Tool)를 이용해 측정하였다.

The purpose of this research is to the effects of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on stress response and power in psychiatric inpatients in a closed ward. This study is a quasi-experiment designed to examine the intervention effects of mindfulness meditation program on mental health conditions of inpatients in the locked psychiatric ward, as well as investigate the potential application of mindfulness meditation as a nursing intervention. The mindfulness meditation program conducted in this study was a six-session program, in which participants were asked to meditate for 45 minutes twice a week for 3 weeks. Each session of the mindfulness meditation program was conducted according to mindfulness-based procedures. This study was approved by Eulji University Research Ethics Committee (EUIRB2016-39) before data was collected. Data for this study was collected through self-reporting questionnaires from 49 inpatients in the locked psychiatric ward of Mental Hospital in Seoul, Korea, during September, October, and November 2016. The mindfulness meditation program was provided to the experimental group. In this study, stress response was measured by the Stress Response Scale and power was measured by the PKPCT (Power as Knowing Participating in Change Tool). The collected data was analyzed using SPSS Statistics 24.0. The prior homogeneity between the experimental and control group was assessed using Chi-square test, t-test, and Fisher's exact test. The results of the assessment showed that the variances of the two groups were equal. Demographic variables of the study participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study hypotheses were verified using t-test. Cronbach's alpha was measured to assess the reliability of each test. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05. The results are as follows: 1) The Stress Response Scale score of the experimental group significantly decreased from 48.04 to 27.68 after receiving the mindfulness meditation program, while that of the control group slightly decreased from 45.44 to 41.72. (t=3.80, p<0.001). 2) The PKPCT score of the experimental group increased from 207.80 to 239.76 after receiving the mindfulness meditation program, but on the contrary the PKPCT score of the control group decreased from 214.84 to 213.64. (t=-3.41, p<0.001). These results suggest that the mindfulness meditation program is a promising intervention for reducing stress but increasing power of psychiatric inpatients. Furthermore, the mindfulness meditation program can be used as a psychosocial rehabilitation intervention for mental psychiatric inpatients in a closed ward by capitalizing on its positive effects on emotional reactivity and behavioral regulation. Even after being discharged from hospital, mental health patients can continue to practice the mindfulness meditation as it requires no special equipment or materials.
