The practice of reading fluency(RF) and spelling should be preceded in order to successfully achieve the level of reading comprehension and composition writing which is the ultimate objective of basic reading and writing. There are several linguistic factors for RF and spelling, particularly the factors called metalinguistic abilities such as phonological awareness(PA) and morphological awareness(MA) are required. Third and fourth grades in elementary school are widely known as the important period to develop RF and spelling. Therefore, the study was to research how MA ability affects reading and writing skills of primary students in 3-4 grades. The research conducted to students in third and fourth grade in elementary schools in Busan city. 32 students participated in the research, 16 students with language learning disability(LLD), and 16 students with TD. Through K-CTONI-2, LSSC, and KOLRA, LLD and TD groups were screened and proceded MA ability, RF and spelling. MA tasks were divided into three sub-tasks, compound, derivation and production. The compound and derivation tasks were composed based on the phonological and morphological transparency. The results of this research are as follows. First, we investigated two group’s difference in MA aibility. The students with LLD showed prominently lower performance in MA tasks than those with TD. When we analysed in sub-tasks, both groups showed higher scores in compound, derivation and production tasks in order. When we studied difference in the performances on 3 types within each group. TD group showed difficulty in the order of compound, derivation and production. however, their results in compound and derivation tasks were considered almost perfect, as they nearly reached their stage of completion. Like those with TD, LLD group showed difficulty in the order of compound, derivation and production. Although their performances were lower than normal group, they caught up with developmental pattern. On the other hand, both groups with LLD and TD showed the lowest performance in production task. Therefore, It is necessary to keep an eye out for production ability development after the secondary school. Second, through analysing each group’s difference in RF and spelling, the performance of students with LLD was attentively lower than students with TD. Students with LLD showed slower speed and less accuracy in correspondent and non-correspondent writing tasks than students wih TD. Third, we considered correlation among MA, RF and spelling in TD group. RF had correlation with overall performance, derivation and production scores. Particularly, it was found that overall performance and derivative scores were correlated with the reading rate. Normal students use MA to read automatically. Derivation scores are correlated with spelling and correspondent writing scores. It means that normal students who reach close to the completion stage of correspondent writing are influenced by their derivative ability. On the other hand, correlation among MA, RF and spelling in LLD group, accuracy was correlated with derivation, production and overall production. Students with LLD wtill use their MA skills to read accurately. Therefore, they naturally fail to read fluently. Also, spelling is correlated with overall performance and production particularly in correspondent writing. This study revealed how linguistic factors such as RF and spelling interact with MA ability and how they act as the important factor to improve reading and writing abilities for students in third and fourth grade. Therefore RF and spelling should examined to students with LLD. Moreover, the study implies that MA ability is the important element for planning the intervention.
