A study on the types of relations with social workers perceived by the mentally disabled : with an approach based on the Q methodology원문보기

Following the complete revision of the Mental Health Act into the Act on the Improvement of Mental Health and the Support for Welfare Services for Mental Patients, policy, institutional, and practice changes are taking place for the development of social welfare for mental health. There is a need for practical alternatives for practice relations so that a practical intervention will be made when the mentally disabled are in an equal relation with social workers. Their relations with social workers based on their perception of the relations should be a basic foundation before a practical intervention by social workers. This study thus set out to examine relations between the mentally disabled and social workers in the way that they were perceived by the former at a psychiatric rehabilitation institution and check the subjective perception structures of the mentally disabled according to their relations with social workers by applying the Q methodology, thus providing basic data to search for a practical alternative for the mentally disabled and social workers develop into an equal and mutually cooperative relation according to the characteristics of each type. Total 80 Q-statements were extracted based on in-depth interviews with ten patients with mental disabilities at a psychiatric rehabilitation institution in the Chungnam Province from September 22 to October 1, 2017 and also based on literature study. The Q-statements(Q-population) were specified by dividing relations between the mentally disabled and social workers into emotional attachment, professional practice, cooperation, and negative practice with the Q methodology. The study identified four types of relations between the mentally disabled and social workers in the way that the former perceived them based on the Q-sample of total 32 items representing each area and the Q-sort of total 30 respondents(P-sample). The characteristics of each type were as follows: Type 1 concerns professional relations, emphasizing the importance of professional practice by social workers. There was greater importance placed on the professional roles of social workers in an equal relation rather than relatively deep emotional attachment. Type 2 concerns caring relations, reflecting a belief that service would be provided based on the perception that social workers were superior to the mentally disabled rather than in an equal assistance relation. It was believed that the mentally disabled should have deep attachment relations with social workers and be taken care of by them. Type 3 concerns dependent relations, highlighting the importance of emotional attachment relations rather than the professional practice of social workers and explaining that the mentally disabled and social workers were in a relation of mutual aid. It was believed that the mentally disabled were able to help their social workers and play a role together with them. Finally, Type 4 concerns individual relations. Since there were no important elements in relations between the mentally disabled and social workers compared with other types, they seemed to form limited attachment relations as service providers and users, respectively, despite various interactions between them. The implications of the present study put an emphasis on the importance of relations in the practice field of social welfare for mental health. Social workers make independent efforts to form a relation with their clients with mental disabilities to provide them with service, but the perceptions of the mentally disabled are critical for social rehabilitation they seek after. They depend, however, on expert opinions and relational experiences rather than the relations based on their perceptions. If overall relations between the mentally disabled and social workers are based on the perceptions of the former, the latter will be able to increase their intervention efficiency. If dependent relations, which represent the most equal and collaborative relations between them according to the findings of the study, are analyzed, the analysis results will be able to serve as basic data to develop a practice manual for social workers in the practice field of social welfare for mental health.
