Currently, mass-produced vehicles are equipped with various electronic control systems. The mounted electronic control system provides automated functions for some of the repetitive driving tasks that the driver has to operate. The electronic control system uses the information measured from various sensors mounted on the vehicle to comprehends the state of the vehicle, determines the control mode and performs an automated function about driving tasks. However, the electronic control system has a possibility which conduct the malfunction caused by the faults. This is because an abnormal value of mounted sensors causes error in the electronic control system. A fault in the sensor itself does not affect anything to the vehicle itself, but faulty value causes a mis-decision of the controller and it needs to be avoided because it has the authority to command the actuator to generate a control input that can cause an accident. Various manufacturers and industry representatives are fully aware of these risks and have established ISO 26262. ISO 26262 is the international standard on functional safety for the development process of electronic control systems mounted on automobiles, and suggests the development methods of electronic control systems to prevent accidents caused by fault. ISO 26262 defines the activities that need to be performed with the model of the process, the required output, and so on. Through ISO 26262, development continues until a reasonable level of risk to the vehicle is reduced. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a fail-safe algorithm that detect sensor faults and remove faulty values from the controller by referring to ISO 26262-6, and then performs fault - tolerance control. The fail-safe algorithm consists of three steps which are fault detection / fault decision / fault tolerance. The three steps define faults using various methods and perform fault tolerance control. In this paper, Fail-safe algorithm monitors and removes faults of yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensors which frequently used for vehicle electronic control. If the fail-safe algorithm removes the fault, fail-safe algorithm replace the faulty value with an estimated vehicle state. In this paper, a yaw rate and a lateral acceleration are estimated by applying a 2 DOF vehicle model to a Kalman filter, and a fault tolerance control is performed by replacing a faulty value with an estimated vehicle state at the time of defect occurrence. Lastly, for the verification of the fail-safe algorithm, A Lane Keeping System, fault injection model and road environment are implemented on the model to simulate and validate. Finally, the simulation was performed out by injecting various fault the lateral electronic control system with the fail-safe algorithm, and the fail-safe algorithm was able to separate the fault and confirm that the LKS maintains normal operation even when faults occur.
