When children from parents of multicultural backgrounds enter school, they show school maladjustments and social maladjustments. However, our society does not have enough sources to deal with problems. This means that it is time for educational interventions for parents with diverse backgrounds. Thus, this study aims to develop a parent education program to deal with and to get educational supports. for people with multicultural backgrounds. . The four studying questions were established: first, how do those parents acknowledge their roles when their children go to school?; Second, what are the difficulties when they carry out their roles?; Third, what prevents them to participate a general parent education?; Four, how do teachers perceive problems of not participating a parent education for parents with diverse cultural backgrounds? This study used a qualitative method. Through a convenience sampling, data were collected from 8/11 to 12/19, 2017. Based on reviewing previous studies, a questionary was made for interviews. Through several pre-interviews, questions were modified. The results are followed. For the first study question, there were three roles that participants thought to be critical, in which were: ① that their children’s education was the priority, ② that in order not to feel shame about them, they need to keep their children’s self-esteem up, ③ that they make an active relationship with others. Next is to look at difficulties of doing parents roles. At first, for worries about school life, parent participants worried that their children were picked because they were strangers, or that they felt lonely among peers because they were underachieved academically. At home, when they did educational supports for their children, they felt burdened; that they could not support financially for their children’s extra curricular activities; that there was no cooperation from other family members to make a learning environment for their children; that they did not know how to correct their children’s language; that they did not have enough informations for their children’s future education; that due to parent’s lack of technology skills, they did not know how to access electronic class notes. The third difficulty they felt was about a general educational climate in Korea. Parents with diverse backgrounds were overwhelmed that other parents were very protective of their children’s education and without helps from private lessons, they did not think that their children could follow school works. With a very complicated university entrance exam system and an education system only for entering a university, parents with multicultural backgrounds did not know how to educate their children in Korea. In relationships with teachers, they were intimidated by teachers, so when they met teachers these participants felt very nervous and uncomfortable. The last difficult that parents faced was about other parents. When they met other parents, they felt alienated because they were ‘different,’and had a low self-esteem because they could not communication smoothly. They had a sense of being inferior to other parents in appearances. Thirdly, participants hesitated to go to parent education programs because of following reasons: ① they did not have enough motivation to participate, ② they did not understand what these education programs were for, ③ the effects of programs were not satisfactory, ④ there were few supports from other parents and other family members, ⑤ parents did not have enough time to participate these meetings, ⑥ most of the participants had unsteady home environments. On the other hand, the reasons for participating these programs were their wills to learn Korean education culture and their responsibilities to come to school at the same time of other education programs. Also, these subjects came to the meetings because their husband came along and children’s teachers sent an invitation text to them. The last studying question was about teachers’ perspectives. Teachers did not think that it was not easy to implement a parent education program only for parents with diverse cultural backgrounds since these parents might feel discriminated when a parent education program was designed only for people with diverse backgrounds. When these parents came to the education program and asked to write, they felt very ashamed because they could not write well. After that, they did not want participate any more. Also, parents perceived that the school took care of their children’s education alone. They did not want to come to the program while they were having an awkward feeling with teachers. They had low self-esteems because they were minorities. Additionally, in school, people dealing with a parent education program did not understand the importance of a parent education program for parents with diverse cultural backgrounds. There were a lack of cooperations between school and other agencies. With all these outcomes, it can conclude that reasons of not going to the program are with parents themselves rather than outside of them. This study focuses on a parents education program as one of parents’school involvement behaviors and finds out problems of parents participations in a parent education for parents with divers culture backgrounds. Also, since there is few studies about perspectives of teachers who are in charge of a parent education program, including this into this study is very meaningful. This study found the reasons of not going to a parent education program and then to develop ways to draw out parents into participating in programs. Through our study, it will allow other studies to continue investigating parents’participating in a parent education program and to practice in education setting. A parent education is an adult education and a part of lifelong education. It implies that future study can use these outcomes to develop and implement a parent education program for parents with diverse backgrounds.
