The purpose of this study is to investigate the present state of awareness and support strategies for infant and child problem behaviors of field and prospective preschool teachers. In addition, by analyzing the awareness and support strategies of problem behavior of field teachers and prospective preschool teachers, I try to deal with a more practical problem behavior instructing method in the training process for prospective preschool teachers.
Research problem 1. What are the problem behaviors (type, frequency, severity, etc.) and support strategies for problem behaviors of infants and children recognized by field teachers and prospective preschool teachers? Research problem 2. Is there a difference in perception and support strategies for infant and child problem behavior between field teachers and prospective preschool teachers?
The subjects of this study were prospective preschool teachers in early childhood education departments of four-year college in Gwangju Metropolitan City and teachers of 2 to 5 year-olds working in kindergarten and day care centers. In order to investigate the teachers' perception of infant and child problem behavior, the types of infant problem behavior developed by Essa (1998) developed and adapted by Ko Hyeon (2008) and the infant problem behavior type modified and supplemented by Park Sung-boon (2001) were modified and supplemented appropriately to fit the objectives of this research. The Teacher Strategy Questionnaire (TSQ) which was translated, modified, and supplemented by Kim Yun-ha (2007) based on the 51 items collected from the Behavior Support Questionnaire of Stomont & Stebbins (2005) and the Interventions of Preschool Teachers to Address Challenging Behaviors by Nuggesser & Watkins (2005) was used to examine teachers’ support strategies for infant and child problem behavior. Child problem behavior TSQ was composed of 34 items, which were revised and supplemented them according to the purpose of this study after reviewing the items of the questionnaire. For this study, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and t-test were performed using SPSS WINDOWS 18.0.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the current status of field teachers’ and prospective preschool teachers’ support strategies on problem behavior type perception and problem behavior was examined. It was found that field teachers generally perceived problem behaviors as problematic. Among the sub-domains of problem behavior types, peer-related behavior, morality-related behavior, interfering behavior, and aggressive antisocial behavior were most commonly perceived as problem behavior. Prospective preschool teachers also perceived problem behaviors as problematic for infant and children problem behaviors. The sub-domains of the problem behavior type were similar with those of the field teachers, with peer-related behavior, morality-related behavior, interfering behavior, and aggressive antisocial behavior the highest. In support strategies for problem behaviors of infants and children of the field teachers, positive response strategies were generally used, and negative response strategies were relatively fewer. Prospective preschool teachers also replied that they should use a positive response strategy rather than negative response strategy in support strategies for infant and children problem behavior, similarly with field teachers. Second, we investigated the differences in the perception of types of problem behaviors and support strategies for infants and children between field teachers and prospective preschool teachers. There were statistically significant differences in peer-related behaviors, destructive behaviors, and basic lifestyle habits among the sub-domains of problem behaviors perceived by field teachers and prospective preschool teachers, but generally, there was not much difference. Also, there was no statistically significant differences in perception of neither overall nor sub-domains of support strategies for infant and child problem recognized between field teachers and prospective preschool teachers.
