Children with delayed language development may have difficulty in concentrating in talking with other people due to poor language ability compared to normal children. This difficulty can be led to the reduction of motive for communication and the constant defect on communication situation. A method to remind attention on language and continue to keep learned contents for long periods is needed through experience and exploration in order to solve it. Therefore, this study developed application using augmented reality that applied the reality with virtuality. In case of learning verbs that represent the movement, it established a hypothesis that augmented reality-based application would be more effective than picture cards, and examined what it has effects on the improvement of expressing verbs of children with delayed language development. The chronological age of three subjects was 3.6 years old. However, the expressive language abilities of the children were delayed more than six months than age. Instrument was a verbal intervention program that represented 84 goal verbs referring to the selection of basic vocabulary proposed by previous research into augmented reality-based application. Multiple baseline design among subjects was used for the method and intervention with face-to-face training was conducted twice a week. Results from this study are presented as follows. First, children with delayed language development through verbal intervention using augmented reality-based application showed the increased accuracy of verb expression in the phase of intervention. In addition, verbal intervention using this application was found effective in verb expression of these children as it showed constant accuracy in the phase of maintenance. Second, verbal intervention using augmented reality-based application found that children with delayed language development generalized to express goal verbs even if they are presented as picture cards. Thus, verbal intervention using augmented reality-based application was found effective given the improvement in verbal expression of children with delayed language development and the generalization into picture cards. In this way, it is concluded that utilizing augmented reality that can represent the movement and status of verbs has positive effects on verb expression. This study has limitations to extend to be interpreted to the expression of other parts of speech as it selected only verbs as goal vocabulary. Moreover, it is limited to generalize to other communication disorders as only children with delayed language development were targeted as study subjects. Further research is expected to examine the effects of various language areas and parts of speech as well as verbal expressions.
