Art history today is described and led by the art market, which has also made art itself to be popular. Not only the art galleries or dealers, of which most are commercial based, have great success, major auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s also proudly announce yet another record-breaking sale of artworks. The monumental growths of the leading art fairs have led to increase in the number of new and smaller-scaled art fairs, all over from capitals even to local towns. The history of commercial art fair dates back to 1460~1560 in Antwerpen, Belgium, at an open square close to a church located at the very heart of the city. Here various artworks including paintings, sculptures, books, and prints. Although Armory Show can be considered as the cornerstone of modern art fairs, the international art market is rather run by its younger successors Art Basel, Frieze, Fiac, and Tefaf. The growths of many art fair and their local fairs have altered the form and the trend of the overall art market in the past two decades. Their definite success stories have led to births of smaller art fairs such as Unlimited, Scope, NADA, Affordable Art Fair, and regional fairs in Shanghai and Dubai. Each of the newly formed fairs must seek for a different strategy, in today’s flood of art fairs. Each fair needs to find its unique, ideal market and collectors. During the fair, Art Basel Miami provides private NetJets for super rich collectors, hold various top-level parties, and provides exclusive services to collectors in cooperation with luxury brands. Fiac of Paris, which has suffered from a steady loss of audience, has made a successful comeback by switching its venue inside a dome-shaped palace. MACO(Mexico) and Art Dubai have successfully incorporated their regional characteristics and unique weather into their brands. And Shanghai Contemporary, backed by governmental financial support, well applied its long-oriental history into its brand. In the globalized world of art markets, art fairs shall not only focus on commercial function, but take more role in collaborating with their own regional roots, thereby serving the role as a regional art festival. These festivals popularity and fame by collectors and the public. These influences of the fairs, in turn, lead to cultural development, growth in tourism, and economical invigoration of the region that improves the brand of the city. This study focuses on the impact of an art fair on city branding and regional economic development, to suggest academic and business level application by analyzing how identity of an art fair is established and how city branding is improved. To accomplish the above goals, the overall status of local and foreign-based art fairs has been studied. For art fairs festivity, network, and marketability were selected, and identity, image, and uniqueness for city branding. The regional economic development was analyzed in a single criterion. Target study was based on the survey conducted through the visitors of Art Busan, the largest art fair in Korea for the first half year. The result of the analysis is as followed: Initial analysis on the general nature of an art fair shows that many of the visitors are general visitors, or non-collectors. However, 44.1% of the respondents have purchased an artwork in their lives. Over half of the surveyors believe that an art fair has an important role in the art market. Majority of the visitors have also visited other fairs, but mostly in Busan or nearby region. The most important criteria for choosing an art fair depends on either the quality or the quantity of participating galleries, or both. Many have claimed that being able to freely enjoy and view various artworks is the greatest advantage during a fair. One learns about the news of an art fair through friends and acquaintances. The most memorable special exhibitions in Art Busan was Korean painting exhibition, followed by Paik Namjoon and Minjung Art exhibitions, and these special exhibitions were responded as the most valuable criteria in Art Busan. Many believed that Art Busan holds various special exhibitions each year for fulfilling visitors’ desire to enjoy culture. In overall, 57.6% had been satisfied with the exhibitions during Art Busan. Lastly, the respondents believed Art Busan should consider online advertisement and promotion as the most important factors. Data analysis on the art fairs showed festivity with the highest score(M=3.45), followed by marketability(M=3.41) and network(M=3.38). The art fair in general resulted in average score of 3.41. Thirdly, city branding was analyzed. In overall, the highest score resulted from identity(M=3.64), followed by uniqueness(M=3.55), and image(M=3.54). The general city branding resulted in 3.57 points in average. A thorough analysis on regional economic growth resulted in average score of 3.55 for the development in general. Then, the correlations between each variable were studied. The result shows the criteria for art fairs (festivity, network, and marketability) and city branding (identity, image, and uniqueness) have positive correlation with each other(p<.001), and with regional economic growth as well(p<.001). Moreover, the three criteria for city branding, identity, image, and uniqueness, too showed positive correlation with regional economy statistically.
