The purposes of this study were to investigate how Home Meal Replacement (HMR) products are used by customers and distributors in the HMR industry and to provide baseline data for establishing future HMR product development strategies in the differences in perception of HMR products. The study results were as follows. An Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) of HMR product attributes in the perspective of distributors resulted in an average importance score of 4.12 and an average performance score of 3.87, and the difference was significant (p<0.001). Those results showed the significant differences in 12 attributes among the distributors (p<0.001). For the differences in perception towards HMR and the level of expectation confirmation, in accordance with the purchase characteristics of customers, results indicated that there was a high level of expectation confirmation for saving meal preparation time (p<0.001), convenience (p<0.01), and variety of menu (p<0.01), when customers bought HMR products four or more times a week. The results of the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) showed that the expectation-confirmation level for HMR products had positive effects on both convenience and satisfaction, and convenience had positively meaningful effects on both usability and satisfaction. Usability also had a positive effect on the satisfaction level of HMR products, and satisfaction had a positive effect on future repurchase intention for HMR products. As a result, all study hypotheses were supported. An analysis on the difference between distributors and customers perception resulted in a significant difference on all items. In other words, all the attributes of HMR products did not meet the expectation confirmation level of customers compared to the performance assessment of distributors. Meanwhile, distributors satisfied the consumers’ convenience needs. HMR products have been launched based on its convenience, yet they are food products and needs for a product development, therefore HMR products has to meet the expectation of customers in terms of the most fundamental aspect of food, taste. Therefore, the development HMR products that can satisfy customers, in terms of both convenience and taste, will result in successful accomplishments in the growing competitive HMR market.
