As a new group of people named Generation Z has emerged recently, a particular attention is being paid to their unique characteristics and behaviors which are being recognized as a center of global consumption culture. The people who belong to Generation Z actively utilize digital technology to their consumption activity because they are people who have grown up surrounded by digital environment ever since they were infants. They are showing distinctive purchase behavior differentiated from the people in older generations. Since the people belonging to Generation Z have considerable role in creating a new consumption market, observing the consumption behavior of Generation Z might have an important meaning in identifying a change occurring in consumption culture. Therefore, a study is necessary to explore the purchase behavior and psychological characteristics inherent in consumers who belong to Generation Z. In this study, qualitative research was conducted to investigate Generation Z consumers' personal characteristics, shopping orientation, clothing consumption value, and characteristics occurring at each step during purchase decision making process and identify the difference from the consumers in older generations. To do this, in-depth interviews were carried out for 11 female consumers who belonged to Generation Z, that is, were born after 1995 and had experience to purchase fashion goods at least three times a month in average with their own economic power that came from social activities. The scope in this study was limited to fashion clothing, fashion accessory, and lifestyle goods. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the subjects of this study, who were female consumers belonging to Generation Z, showed the following personal characteristics: an active enjoyment to culture, a high interest to fashion, an apparent desire to presenting own individuality, a proficient use of mobile devices and online search for fashion information. Second, in terms of clothing shopping orientation appearing at fashion products shopping behavior of Generation Z female consumers, five characteristics were observed as follows: pleasure orientation, rational orientation, comfort orientation, brand loyalty orientation and individuality orientation. Third, in terms of clothing consumption value Generation Z female consumers pursued when they select fashion products, four consumption value categories were observed: functional consumption value, emotional consumption value, conditional consumption value, and self-expression oriented consumption value. Fourth, details about each step of Generation Z female consumers' purchase decision making process are identified as follows. In the first step which is a problem recognition step, four purchase motivations were identified: 'influence of media', 'scarcity', 'diversion', and 'admiration to celebrities'. Mostly they recognize the problem through external stimulus. In the second step which is an information search, the subjects of this study researched products through media source, experience source, and human source. In particular, they took considerable time to search information and access mobile and online-based sources just before they made final decision to purchase. In the third step which is an alternative evaluation, seven factors were identified for assessment criteria: 'self-expression', 'practicality', 'price', 'aesthetic impression', 'brand loyalty', 'scarcity' and 'online customer reviews'. In the fourth step which is a purchasing step, the subjects showed three particular behaviors: planned purchasing behavior, impulsive purchasing behavior, and multi-channel oriented purchasing behavior. In the fifth step which is a post-purchase evaluation step, the subjects evaluated their purchase in multiple ways: 'evaluation for themselves', 'evaluation for brand of the purchased products', and 'evaluation for possibility of repeat purchasing'. In the last step which is a post-purchase behavior, distinctive behavioral characteristics for the Generation Z appeared. After purchasing, they actively shared their purchasing experience with others compositively utilizing online and offline channels such as 'active activity for producing and sharing online contents', and 'word-of-mouth'. On the other hand, for fashion products they are not wearing any more, they showed 'active fashion disposal activity' as an economic, practical and social disposal behavior.
