This study qualitatively examined the characteristics and cultural identity of Korean youths (TCK; Third Culture Kid), who have experience of moving abroad to other countries, minimum of two time and for three or more years, due to their parents’ work in today’s globalized world. This study conducted a narrative interview and three phone interviews with youths, who have experience of moving to multiple countries, and then they were asked to analyze their own statements. The first interview was analyzed for the characteristics of TCKs, by investigating the experience-based statements of study participants. The second interview was analyzed for their cultural identity based on the stories of their current status, while the third interview was examined for the various meaning and values that such an experience has, by looking at the self-understanding and future plans of study participants. Study result showed that the characteristics and cultural identity of TCKs found in this study are different from existing TCK research theories. The results regarding the characteristics of TCKs are as follows: First, these youths go through a moderate level of intercultural conflict and identity crisis. The primary reason is their frequent visits to Korea and communication through the social media, modern and cutting-edge transportation and communication networks today. These factors are all interconnected, creating a pattern of “visit to Korea ⇒ encounter with people ⇒ social media ⇒ amplified common experience ⇒ maintained relationship”, allowing for them to maintain consistent relationships, which have controlled the level of cultural conflicts. In addition, TCKs attend international schools where English serves as the medium. International schools act as a medium for a borderless, global buffer that allows TCKs to adapt to the local environment when moving to a new country. Moreover, these youths showed the ability to adapt to multicultural environments and acquire balancing skills. First, based on their experience of moving to different countries, TCKs were able to adapt faster to new cultures, and had acquired a cultural excellence, whereby they do not show any resistance or negative attitude towards unfamiliar environments and cultures. Second, there was a difference in the level of ability to adapt, according to the age of their first migration and preference of country. Those who had experience of migrating in their childhood, before reaching their teenage years, were able to more easily adapt to new environments, and they adapted faster in countries that they liked. Furthermore, they showed conflicting tendencies of wide cultural sensitivity and the desire to settle down in Korea. TCKs have a high understanding of other cultures based on their direct experience abroad thus have a wide cultural sensitivity that is appropriate for today’s world of globalization. However, their final goal was to settle in Korea. The analysis showed that a strong national identity as a Korean and because of the special college admissions system for Korean nationals living abroad. This study indicates that the cultural identity of TCKs is different from non-TCKs from that of existing TCK samples. Therefore, it was analyzed that the “third cultural identity”, which was known as the original TCK cultural identity, is actually a “cross-cultural identity” that has a fluid and hybrid nature. Therefore, TCKs exhibit a strong identity for both their own culture and other cultures, and with a wide scope of intercultural sensitivity, they have created a fluid and hybrid cultural identity. This study has newly defined the cultural identity of TCKs as “cross-cultural identity”, which encompasses the concept of both “trans” and “inter”. This “cross-cultural identity” is considered as the stepping stone for becoming a global citizen, and the cross-cultural identity of TCKs is deemed to have a value and potential for the future. To prevent their experience and intercultural sensitivity from being merely used as a means for entering Korean universities, and in turn allowing them an advantage in entering Korean society, more emphasis must be placed on the role of university education and education of TCKs after university admission. Therefore, this paper proposed the need for higher education that can embrace TCKs, when they come back and enter a Korean university that can assist them to be global citizens.
