The purpose of this study is to develop a cognitive-behavioral therapy program for posttraumatic growth of child abuse survivors and to verify its effectiveness through a comparative study among the experimental group who was implemented the program, the comparative group who was implemented the narrative therapy, and the control group who received nothing. To achieve this, a preliminary program was developed based on the data gathered from in-depth interviews with child abuse survivors and revised and reinforced. The components of the final cognitive-behavioral therapy program included: (1) Cognitive Reconstruction I, where child abuse survivors are able to alternatively think and revise by finding automatic thinking on self-awareness variables; (2) Relaxation Training that is absolutely necessary for processing anxiety and awakening arising from repetitive exposure to traumatic child abuse experiences that must precede for posttraumatic growth; (3) Cognitive Reconstruction II based on intentional rumination for posttraumatic growth; and (4) Social Skills Training developed in consideration of the issue of interpersonal relations commonly suffered by child abuse survivors. For this study, people who experienced repeating abuses and mild traumatic symptoms were sorted and interviewed by clinical psychologists to determine whether their symptoms fell under the scope of PTSD and a total of 24 persons were selected. Then the subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups of 8, the experimental group made prone to the cognitive-behavioral therapy program, the comparative group made prone to the narrative therapy program, and the control group. The experimental and comparative groups received ten 90-minute sessions of their respective program, one session per week. To measure the changes before and after the program, survey questionnaires were divided into self-awareness variables (self-awareness scale-shame, guilt, exteriorization, indifference/separation, self-esteem), emotional variables (fear of rejection scale, depression scale), and social relationship variables (interpersonal relations problem scale, fear of intimacy scale) and distributed before and after the program. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. Specific methods for the analysis are as follows: (1) Kruskal Wallis test, a nonparametric test, to determine the difference in pre-test and post-test scores among the groups and a post-test through Bonferroni correction, (2) Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a nonparametric test, to determine the difference in pre-test and post-test scores among the groups for each variable and the difference in pre-test and follow-up test scores between experimental and comparative groups for each variable; (3) Mann-Whitney U test, a nonparametric test, to determine the difference between follow-up test scores between experimental and comparative groups for each variable; (4) Friedman test, a nonparametric test, to determine the change in pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test scores between experimental and comparative groups for each variable; and (5) content analysis on excerpts from worksheets and recordings to explore the change in negative thinking and belief of experimental group after implementing the program after supplementing the reliability of test results from quantitative analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, both the experimental group and comparative group, which were respectively subject to the cognitive-behavioral therapy program and narrative therapy program, displayed difference between pre-test and post-test scores in self-esteem, one of self-awareness variables. As for sense of shame, the experimental group displayed a more significant difference than the comparative group. Only the experimental group displayed changes in guilt and indifference / separation. Most importantly, when conducted a follow-up test 3 months after the program to verify the continuity of effectiveness of the program, it was disclosed that only the experimental group maintained the changes. Second, when tested depression and fear of rejection to explore the emotional variables, it was disclosed that both experimental group and comparative group displayed changes, but the difference displayed by the experimental group was more significant. Although the methods of approach may differ, it was conjectured that the common elements of change in negative self-awareness and social support through group participation made a difference. However, when conducted a follow-up test 3 months after the program, only the experimental group maintained its changes. Third, with regard to the interpersonal relations, both groups displayed a difference, but the experimental group displayed a more significant change in excessive adaptation and self-sacrifice. When conducted a follow-up test 3 months after the program, only the experimental group maintained its changes in interpersonal relations problem. Both experimental and comparative groups scored lower in the fear of intimacy variable. The significances of this study are as follows: (1) this study meritoriously proved the effectiveness of the cognitive-behavioral therapy program for posttraumatic growth of child abuse survivors. Cognitive-behavioral therapy programs for child abuse survivors with complex PTSD symptoms are virtually nonexistent, and especially, this study established cognitive reconstruction using narratives as one of program components for the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of TF-CBT and posttraumatic growth; (2) this program is able to identify early child abuse survivors who do not meet the criteria of PTSD for early treatment to offer psychological comfort and prevent the symptoms of PTSD; (3) if previous studies on PTSD focused on the emotions of a trauma, this study regarded variables of self-awareness, emotions and interpersonal relations in consideration that child abuse survivors display symptoms of complex PTSD, substantiating the need for a more complex approach as suggested in previous studies; and (4) through in-depth interviews with child abuse survivors, their psychological and social difficulties were identified and this program was built on that foundation to facilitate understanding of the characteristics of child abuse survivors and prepared proper and specific approaches for intervention.
