The Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (Joiner, 2005) presented the perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as the key factors that can cause a suicidal ideation. The preceding studies conducted on the youth reported that the effects of these two factors on a suicidal ideation are mediated by the meaning in life (Kleiman & Beaver, 2013) while researches on the elderly whose significance of the meaning in life is stressed from a developmental perspective are limited at best. Against this backdrop, this study has attempted to identify whether or not the effects of perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness of the elderly on a suicidal ideation is mediated by the meaning in life and, during this process, examined if social participation known as a protective factor against elderly suicide has a moderating effect. For this, a total of 403 elderly men and women residing in Honam area have been selected as the subjects of the study, among whom self-report surveys have been conducted as to perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, meaning in life (presence of meaning/search for meaning) and social participation. The mediating analysis with the use of the process macro has identified the path where the perceived burdensomeness encourages a suicidal ideation through the presence of the meaning in life. On the other hand, the thwarted belongingness has turned out to be significant only in a direct path to a suicidal ideation. The analysis results of moderated mediating effects, including social participation have found that social participation does mediate the path to a suicidal ideation caused by the perceived burdensomeness through the presence of the meaning in life, verifying its moderated mediating effects. In other words, the presence of the meaning in life has a greater mediating effect among the elderly with less social participation than those with more active social participation in a relationship between the perceived burdensomeness and a suicidal ideation among the elderly. These results suggest that the intervention focused on discovering the meaning in life may be more effective in reducing the suicidal risk among the elderly although it cannot be generalized among all elderly population as this study has been conducted on a limited sample of the remarried elderly residing in a specific area. Despite this limitation, however, the identification of the relationship between the meaning in life and social participation in terms of the relationship between the interpersonal variables of the elderly and their suicidal ideation has presented some meaningful insight into catering to the elderly’s interpersonal needs and intervention against suicide.
