BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although a lot of efforts have been made to increase fruits and vegetable intake in toddlers, vegetable intake in this age group is still low. This study was to investigate whether nutrition education focusing on fruits and vegetable intake affects preschoolers’ fruit and vegetable intakes as well as behavioral outcomes.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 35 preschoolers (boys n=19, 54.3%) aged 4 to 6 years residing in Seoul were employed for weekly nutrition education intervention (8 sessions) from May to July in 2016.
RESULTS: After nutrition education, vegetables intake increased from 36.15 ± 30.64g to 48.01 ± 31.23g (P=0.010). In emotional and behavior problems measured by parents, total problems (P=0.001), internalizing (P=0.004), externalizing (P=0.003), anxiety and depression (P=0.001), and aggressive behavior (P=0.005) decreased. Anxiety (P=0.026) score measured by teachers also decreased. Nutrition education regarding fruits and vegetable intake for preschoolers may have a positive effect on preschoolers` vegetables intake as well as emotion and behavior outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: A long-term, large-scale study with a broader intake range is warranted to further investigate a role of fruits and vegetable intake in cognitive development and behavioral outcomes in preschoolers.
