ABSTRACT
Effects of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccination on Behavior and Productivity in Cattle Kwon, Hyoun Chul Department of Animal Science and Technology Graduate School of Konkuk University
A total of 4 experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of Foot-and-Mouth Disease(FMD) vaccination on behavior and productivity in cattle. Inactivated vaccines such as FMD Omanisa, O 3039, and A22 Iraq were used in each experiment. In the first study, effects of additional FMD vaccination on behavior, blood profiles, feed intake, weight gain and antibody formation of Korean native growing cattle were investigated. There was no significant difference in Active and Not active behavior of experimental animals. There was no significant difference in feed intake and daily weight gain by FMD vaccination. After FMD vaccine injection, Korean native growing cattle showed greater MCV (P<0.05) and lower MCH (P<0.05) and MCHC (P<0.01) in red blood cell categories. In white blood cell categories, LY (P<0.01) and GR (P<0.01) increased after 1 day of vaccination but GRA tended to show quadratic response; increase and then decrease (P=0.06). Cortisol concentration was increased after 7 days of FMD vaccination (P<0.05). The ELISA test value of antibody formation was greater after 7 days of FMD vaccination(P<0.01). In second study, effects of FMD vaccination on milk yield, blood profiles, behavior and antibody formation of Holstein lactating cows were investigated. Not active behavior was increased at 0 day (P <0.05) and 2 days (P <0.01). There were no significant differences in the behavioral changes of the lactating cows according to the parity. HCT and PLT (P<0.05) were increased and MCHC was decreased (P<0.05). In white blood cell categories, GR (P<0.05) and GRA (P<0.001) increased after 1 day of vaccination. WBC was increased after 1 day of vaccination, but after 7 days of vaccination the value came back to the level of 1 day before vaccination (P=0.07). LY showed a tendency of quadratic response; decrease after 1 day of vaccination and then increase (P=0.09). AST and glucose were increased (P<0.05) after FMD vaccination. The value of cortisol, however, was not affected by FMD vaccination (P<0.05). There was significant difference in antibody formation at 7 days after vaccination (P<0.01) though numerical value of the difference before and after FMD vaccination was similar. From 2 days before FMD vaccination to 6 days after FMD vaccination, there was no significant difference in milk yield. In third trial, effects of FMD vaccination on blood profiles, change of hormones, behavior and antibody formation of Holstein dry cows were investigated. In behavior, there were no significant differences in the behavioral changes of the dry cows. PLT was increased (P<0.05) in red blood cell categories. GR was decreased (P<0.05) and LY tended to show increase (P=0.1). Glucose was decreased (P<0.01) and cortisol showed no significant difference. Progesterone regulating pregnancy maintenance did not differ by FMD vaccination. Antibody formation, also, did not show significant difference. During the experimental period, abortion did not happen and there was no significant difference in premature birth. In fourth trial, effects of conventional and regular FMD vaccination program on behavior of Holstein dry, lactating cows were investigated. In behavior of lactating cows, active decreased in 1 day (P <0.05) and tended to decrease at 2 days (P = 0.069). Not active behavior increased to 0 day (P <0.01), 1 day (P <0.05) and 2 days (P <0.01). and tended to show increase at 5 days (P = 0.077) and 7 days (P = 0.089). Eating was decreased at 0 day (P <0.05), 1 day (P <0.01) and 2 days (P <0.05). Ruminating was decreased at day 0 (P <0.01) but increased at 1, 3 and 4 days (P <0.05). It was investigated that the milk yield of Holstein lactating cows from 3 days before vaccination to 7 days after vaccination. The milk yield was decreased 1 day (P <0.01), 2 days (P <0.01) and 3 days (P <0.05) and tended to decrease after 4 days (P = 0.052) after the FMD vaccination. And after 4 days, there was no significant difference from milk yield before FMD vaccination. For three days, the milk production was decreased by 5.3%. The behavior of Holstein dry cows did not show significant difference as the result of Study 3. Overall, regular FMD vaccination program such as every 6 months could reduce some behaviors of cattle, however, it was a common vaccine response. And it might also affect productivity, but it was not significant and returned to the same state as before vaccination within 3 to 7 days. In conclusion, the result of this experiment would improve awareness of prejudice and negative viewpoint of FMD vaccination program in Korea.
