The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderate effect of self-esteem on the relationship between parent attachment style and the interpersonal relationships among children. Using the survey, data were collected from 817 elementary school students. Data were analyzed with factor analysis, K-means cluster, Cronbach's α, t-test, F-test, and Scheffe’s post-hoc test, and Two-Way-ANOVA using by SPSS 23.0 Program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, girls had more communication with their father while boys had the higher trust in their father. The fifth graders perceived higher trust in their father than the sixth graders. In addition, the higher father's educational level were, the higher children perceived trust in their parents and had more communication with their father. The lower children's academic score were, the lower children perceived trust in their parents and the higher alienation from parents were shown.
Second, as for the type of attachment to parents, children had more stable attachment with their parents. However, there were many cases of unstable attachment with their parents than expected. As for the combined parental attachment type, stable attachment to father-stable attachment to mother recorded the highest percentage, followed by unstable attachment to father-unstable attachment to mother, stable attachment to father-unstable attachment to mother, and unstable attachment to father-stable attachment to mother.
Third, children’s interpersonal relationships with friends and teachers were the most positive when their combined parental attachment type was stable attachment to father-stable attachment to mother, but were the least when their combined parents attachment type was unstable attachment to father-unstable attachment to mother. This indicated that children’s interpersonal relationship differed depending on the type of combined attachment to their parents.
Fourth, there were the interaction effects of combined parental attachment type and self-esteem on interpersonal relationship in children, main effect and interaction effect were found in combined parental attachment type and self-esteem. Compared to the group with lower self-esteem, the group with higher self-esteem showed higher level of relationships with friends and teachers, and this difference between groups was more prominent in children with combined parental attachment type shown as unstable attachment to father-stable attachment to mother. Among children with combined parental attachment type of unstable attachment to father-stable attachment to mother, those with high self-esteem showed high level of relationship with friends, while those with low self-esteem showed low level of relationship with friends. On the other hand, children with high self-esteem showed low level of relationship with teacher, while those with low self-esteem showed high level of relationship with teacher.
In conclusion, the results of this study implied the significance of stable attachment to parents for children’s positive interpersonal relationship as well as children's self-esteem to moderate the negative influence of unstable attachment to parents. In order to help children having positive interpersonal relationship with friends and teachers, the targets of the counseling and parent education focus on stable attachment with children as well as on children's self-esteem to intervene negative influence of unstable attachment with parents.
