This paper examines the philosophical meanings of reality criticism in Aristophanes’ comedies. It focuses on analyzing messages shown through dramatic actions in his existing eleven plays. It is also a research to address criteria of texts, referring to those two main component parts of Ancient Greek old comedy, Agon and Parabasis. Agon means a serious argument and a domain of contest or competition. Parabasis is basically entertaining and humorous, but it also states advice and opinion against irrational reality. Contrasting features of agon and parabasis can be explained by coupling each conflicting definitions such as argument and reconciliation; dispute and resolution; contradiction and advisement. Agon is a political speaking place of the Assembly as well as the plays. Parabasis is an extension of Agon and a scene for interacting with audience for festive feature at the same time. This paper classifies the comedies into four categories according to their themes. First category includes Acharnenses, Pax, and Lysistrata that long for a lasting peace through peace movement and so are called the three peaceful plays. Second the works that states conflict on the philosopher’s knowledge standards, that is, Nubes, Thesmophoriazusae, and Ranae. Third Equites, Vespae, and Avesn that show rebellion on a corrupted social system and abuses, and criticism to the corrupted political and trial systems of Polis. Fourth his last two works, Ecclesiazusae and Plutus that are about calls for radical reformation of Utopia. Aristophanes’ revolutionary philosophy presented essential problems of many influential fields, such as politics, economics, society, and education. Main concepts shared in these eleven works are mentioned as war, peace, ceasefire, justice, happiness, misfortune, woman, equality, public, demagogy, confrontation, argument, community, sophistry, politics, satire, and humor. These concepts are organically combined in the plots. Aristophanes delivered message by classifying into two powers in urgent and vulgar reality of Athens; normal power which is intrinsic and abnormal power living off those with normal power. His comedic thought challenged hypocrisy and authority in more exciting and cheerful way, and showed Athenian spirit undaunted by any absolute danger. Aristophanes’ comedies made the problems in reality much more of an issue by pointing out the limits of normal and abnormal in the community with aggressive and severe satire targeting to the politicians who were lack of reality awareness. What kick-started Aristophanes’ philosophy of political satire was the Peloponnesian War lasted for 27 years. Nine of his all eleven works were written and performed during this war. He severely criticized prominent intellectuals and demagogue together with their political moves. In his comedies, those which were satirized are not only specific individuals but also typical types of certain moves. In his comedies demagogues, corrupt intellectuals, and even unreasonable political systems were clearly personified, by reifying the abstract concepts, to bring about arguments in interpretation of his comedies. Aristophanes in his comedies as the matrix of western political satire play, severely criticized the anti-athenian-tradition war, sophists, corrupted systems, and atheism and satirized with no mercy those who followed and coaxed them. The wartime situation and freedom of speech in the fifth century B.C. gave him power to create the political satire plays which were unprecedentedly democratic. There are two dramatic actions he tried to show in his plays; one is as a role of learning place represented more education than simple entertaining, the other is as a revolutionary mean against unreasonable political power, philosophers, and poets. These actions reveal contradiction and abnormal ones which were malicious factors hidden in the society and community. This paper finds out four meanings of reality criticism in Aristophanes’ comedies. Firstly, his comedies provided an entertaining place for the public to take a rest from their exhausted life. Secondly, his comedies had a consistent meaning of education to make the public realize the dangerous and threatening reality and learn how to deal with the problems. Thirdly, his comedies expressed strong will for political participation through the main characters of each play. In other words, he tried to tell the importance of political engagement with humor and satire in order to come off the corrupted social systems. Fourthly, the comedies stated the philosophical teaching, leading to introspection about the value of righteous life and its meaning. His comedies expressed displeased feelings against the hypocritical power by trying to justify decent human life in Polis and tried to appeal to the audience. Dramatic action in his plays was a courageous act accusing of the wrong system, so was an art of emotion that gave people’s lives meaning. His plays corresponded with their political and social purposes by depicting the situation humorously and by setting up the protagonists who fought against their fates and developed the events. His plays were composed of actual events occurred at the time. That’s why his plays were neither mythology nor legend. Problems brought up in his comedies allowed the audience to have their own independent viewpoint to observe the reality. He did not merely suggest solutions of the problems but made the audience have questions about their lives. In that sense, his plays also contributed to create a kind of free-thinking place for the community which was described richly in Dionysia festivity. The plays helped the audience look back their relations with the community as well as their own lives. The writer let Athenians realize which was the best for their lives from his plays and made themselves open the way to happiness. Aristotle mentioned “a comedy performed in Athens is more philosophical and educational than politics.” Voltaire said, “a true comedy is to describe a nation’s inanity and defects straightly,” referring to Aristophanes. The philosophy in Aristophanes’ comedies has full of sense to find out irrationalities. And it combined with satire, parody, and even fabulous exaggeration. It targets all areas of human life in Polis to criticize; politics, economics, literatures, philosophy, rhetoric, logic, and so on. Apart from tragedies at the time, comedies were free to mix all materials, such as men of higher and lower position; gods and mortals; humans and animals; fantasies and reality; direct and indirect experiences. This freedom was closely related to the tradition of Polis and democracy at the time. In conclusion, dramatic action that Aristophanes emphasized in his plays is to resist against the unreasonable power on behalf of the community. By sarcastically disclosing specific person’s inconsistency and abnormal side, the comedies brought up self-reflection. Such disclosures that Aristophanes uncovered to Athenians was an individualized expression of actual events. Moreover, discussion on appropriacy of sarcasm which he pursued in his plays still remains useful. Aristophanes’ comedies are understood as art as well as life because they accepted the real society as a righteous environment by adding more humor. Aristophanes’ comedies keep a philosophical meaning that is not limited in a specific period but lasts forever.
