The present study surveyed 196 novice health teachers without the health teacher level 1 qualification training and with less than 4 years of work experience from across Korea. The aim was to survey their perceived job difficulties and job satisfaction at school in order to provide basic data for policy development for novice health teachers.
This study results is summarized as below. First, novice health teachers perceived teaching health to be the most difficult and health management the least difficult among the subareas of job performance. On the contrary, those without clinical experience at hospitals perceived health management more difficult than did those with clinical experience. Perceived job difficulties were high in novice health teachers with less than 2 years of teaching experience and those without experience as a temporary health teacher. These results indicate that the lack of job performance experience at real schools greatly affected novice health teachers’ perceived job difficulties. Training courses are suggested as a solution that provides sufficient work experience prior to employment in school to help reduce their difficulties originating from lack of experience. In order to reduce job difficulties caused by lack of experience, various training courses including a simulation can provide a range of indirect experiences according to the areas and contents of responsibilities. At the same time, it is further recommended to implement a one-on-one mentoring system involving senior health teachers to provide direct exposure to work tasks. These support measures will help novice health teachers perform better at schools.
Second, novice health teachers were most satisfied with job stability, and least satisfied with the tasks assigned among the subareas of job satisfaction. The low satisfaction with the given tasks in novice health teachers is associated with teaching health and adapting to the new school among job performance difficulties. This indicates that it is important to establish support measures for job performance. As the survey results demonstrated that job satisfaction decreases with increasing perceived job difficulties, supportive measures for novice health teachers’ job performance will improve job satisfaction. Novice health teachers’ difficulties in school adaptation directly reduces job satisfaction. Thus, it is important to actively support novice health teachers to successfully adapt to schools. On the other hand, novice health teachers’ satisfaction with work environment and job stability reduced their perceived job difficulties. Therefore, schools need to ensure the provision of a satisfactory work environment to novice health teachers, and more recognize their position as health teachers.
Support measures based on the findings of this study will help novice health teachers smoothly adapt to their teaching profession and job performance at school. Improved job satisfaction will not only contribute to the development of novice health teachers, but also largely improve the quality of public health in schools.
