Uterine leiomyomas are benign tumors originating from smooth muscle cells in the uterus, and are the common in reproductive-age women. According to the statistical data in health insurance review & assessment service, the number of patients with uterine leiomyoma of Korean women increased by an annual average of 5.6% and , in particular, the number of patients in reproductive-age women has increased rapidly in the last three years. Uterine leiomyomas affect up to 70% of women. Clinical presentations include pelvic masses, pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and abnormal bleeding. However, the exact etiology of these tumors is unknown The development of uterine leiomyomas is related to sex hormone, inflammatory mediators, cell proliferation, and angiogenesis. The sex hormones estrogen and progesterone that cause uterine leiomyomas regulate growth factors such as EGF, IGF, TGF-ß, and PDGF. These growth factors activate the smad2/3, PI3K, and ERK1/2 signaling pathways leading to the proliferation of uterine leiomyoma cells and finally uterine leiomyomas. Studies have been conducted to develop a therapeutic agent targeting these mechanisms. Among them, dietary phytochemicals are used as source of new potential drugs for many kinds of tumors. Furthermore, these phytochemicals have been increasingly used in new drug development projects because of effects in uterine leiomyomas. In this study, I investigate the mechanism of uterine leiomyomas in cell proliferation based on the growth factor and signal transduction that were controlled by sex hormone, and suggest new potential phytochemicals that can block this mechanism and mitigate the symptoms of uterine leiomyomas.
