The purpose of this study is to find a way to educate readers (learners) about how to objectively analyze and interpret texts. Deleuze says that some objects or materials provoke specific thoughts and images. The sensory encounter between the subject-matter and the learner allows for the two to interact, transferring signals, which the learner interprets in his or her own way. In the process of interpreting signals, the goals and interests of each learner play a role in shaping their various interpretations. Out of the various signals that the subject emits, some may interact differently depending on the learner’s background and world-view, thus being understood by each learner differently even when he or she encounters the same subject-matter. In reading education, readers are introduced to a text and interpret and accept the signals according to their own perceptions. Since each reader has differing intents and interests, their areas of focus and understanding of the signals derived from the text will also polarize, enabling the reader to construct subjective meanings. Based on this understanding of the process of interpretation, we developed a reading lesson model. A three-phase model that included sympathetic reading, productive reading, and advanced reading, was designed and used in a qualitative case study to test effectiveness. Researchers used two texts for third and fourth-grade elementary school students (I Should Have Taught Tuvalu How to Swim and Greedy Strawberry Ahjussi) and organized their interpretations and thoughts according to the model. The three-phase model was refined and applied in a sixth grade class for a trial period, during which researches observed and analyzed the affects of the model’s application. We hope to continue researching and promoting further understanding of how readers develop subjective interpretations and derive polarizing and personal meanings while reading the same texts.
