This study is aimed to investigate the effects of the forest experience activities on young children's creativity and emotional intelligence. The following research questions were selected for this purpose.
Research Questions 1. Do the forest experience activities affect young children's creativities (fluency, flexibility, originality, imagination)? 2. Do the forest experience activities affect the young children's emotional intelligences (self-emotional awareness and expression, emotional control as well as impulse suppression, use of self-emotion, awareness and consideration of other's emotions, relationship with teachers, and relationship with peers)?
In this study, 12 children, like the subjects, participated in the experimental group (male: 6, female: 6) from 4 to 5 years old children, attending the G daycare center located in I city, Jeollabuk-do and 12 in the control group. The experiment was conducted from March 12, 2018 to May 18, 2018 for 10 sessions for 90 minutes once a week. The experimental group were engaged in the forest experience activities, and the control group were engaged in the activities of the living subjects based on Nuri process. In order to measure the young children's emotional intelligence, the Korean-Comprehensive Creativity Test for Young Children(K-CCTYC) test tool by Jeon, Kyung-Won(1995) was used to measure the young children's creativities, and to measure the young children's emotional intelligences, the teacher's young children Intelligence Rating Scale test tool by Kim, Kyung-Hee(1998) was used. In order to reflect the difference between experimental group and control group, data analysis was done by categorizing creativity and emotional intelligence as covenant, and the covariance analysis was performed on the post test scores using the distinction between experimental group and control group as independent variables.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the young children in the experiment group who performed the forest experience activities showed the more significant difference in the fluency, originality, and imagination, which are sub-factors of creativity, than the young children in the control group who did not perform forest experience activities. Therefore, it can be seen that the forest experience activities have a positive effect on the young children's creativity improvement. Second, the young children in the experimental group who performed the forest experience activities were more aware of the emotional intelligence, the use of self-emotion, the recognition and care of the other's emotion, and the relationship with peers than the young children in the control group who did not perform the forest experience activities. Therefore, it can be seen that the forest experience activities have a positive effect on the improvement of the children's emotional intelligence. In conclusion, it can be considered that the forest experiencing activities have a positive effect on the creativity and emotional intelligences of young children, and this result suggests that the forest experiencing activities are effective in enhancing the creativity and emotionai intelligences of the young children.
