As population increases rapidly and science and technology develop more, global issues like climate change, biodiversity and natural disaster are dealt by the OECD Global Science Forum and the UNESCO's education, natural science, social science and human science divisions. Accordingly, schools try to reflect such issues on their curricula for teaching. Audio-visual materials used in middle school science classes include films, documentaries, YouTube materials and TV programs. However, such films and TV programs are long, which often reduces interest in learning of learners in science classes. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a lecture program managed by a US non-profit organization and makes global issues like global warming and other diverse areas available for lectures. TED is good in that it helps learners to understand interesting subjects easily and fast and that it contributes to making more interesting classes with new and useful contents rather than tedious ones. Therefore, TED-applied classes induce students' interest and pursuit of their future career, improving scientific attitudes. As they are reconstructed and rediscovered based on knowledge and functions obtained from textbooks, students will better understand science. Also, through application to and practice in daily life, learners can understand what they learn better and cultivate positive and scientific attitudes. Based on such understanding, the study developed TED-edited programs related to earth and environment (climate change, biodiversity and natural disaster) corresponding to the 2015 revised science curriculum so that they can be used in science classes of middle school students. Based on the function to offer core concepts, TED will be provided to learners toward development of interest in science and scientific attitude along with subtitles and five-minute lectures. Thus developed TED teaching and learning materials were applied to actual classes for first graders of a middle school in order to explore the impacts of TED-based classes on scientific attitudes of middle school students. The applied research was conducted based on "advance and follow-up tests" and research subjects were 84 students from four classes of A Middle School located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which consisted of traditional lectures and TED-applied ones. Classes were offered over three occasions. Before and after a class, a test consisting of 15 questions about scientific attitudes was conducted. After a class, a satisfaction survey consisting of ten questions was conducted. The results pertaining to scientific attitudes and satisfaction with classes were analyzed through SPSS 24.0. Based on the verification of changes in test results from the application of TED teaching and learning materials, there were significant differences in scientific attitude and satisfaction with classes of both experimental and control groups. Therefore, it was found that classes using TED teaching and learning materials were effective to improve scientific attitudes of middle school students. In conclusion, this study can be used as a background to arrange methods of earth and environment education as a subject to develop scientific aptitude which is pursued in the 2015 revised science curriculum. Also, earth and environment education can be applicable not only to science education but also to various other subjects. It was found, too, that application of TED teaching and learning materials bears positive impacts on scientific attitude and satisfaction with classes. Therefore, it will be necessary to expand science classes using TED teaching and learning materials. It is also significant that this study presented a method for teachers to use TED teaching and learning materials easily in their education. In addition, as core concepts such as climate change, biodiversity and natural disaster related to earth and environment sciences are offered, teachers can apply TED education in consideration of level of understanding of learners and TED characteristics, which will contribute to usage of audio-visual materials for education of earth and science. It is also noteworthy that unlike general audio-visual media, scripts are offered and lectures are given by experts, making it more useful for learners to explore their future career. Finally, database shall be established for smooth application of the developed materials, which must be followed by methodological researches to be linked to creative experiences, free semester system and free grade system.
