A Child Daycare Center Teacher’s Perception of Language Development and Speech Therapy of a Child from Multicultural Family원문보기

Domestic multicultural families have been rapidly increasing to raise the number of children from multicultural family who are financially supported in child care facilities; however, there is a lack of proper preparation for language development and speech therapy for children from multicultural families. The perception and attitude of the teachers of a day care center can form prejudice of children, so the teachers' experience and understanding of children from multicultural family, along with their attitude toward language development and speech therapy are very important. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of teachers working for a day care center toward language development and speech therapy for a child from multicultural family. The study investigated the current state of children from multicultural family, perception of teachers on their role to intervene in the course of language development and speech therapy, and the need to support for the language development and speech therapy for children from multicultural families. Most of the day care center teachers had experience with children from multicultural family, were keenly aware of developmental differences of children, and had acquired information through education for teachers working for a day care center. However, they were yet skilled to deal with the children on the spot. They asked for support through education and workshops and wanted a specialist who understands the characteristics of children from multicultural families to educate and treat the kids. The teachers at day care centers think that they need to be well developed not only for language but all developmental aspects, and it seems that the level of the teachers' awareness for language therapy seems high; however, there is a considerable lack of understanding about how to approach and the administrative support (voucher) at a national level. There is lack of promotion of administrative support (voucher) and teachers give up in the middle due to the small number of people selected for the government support. Therefore, this study suggests to imrprove the right understanding and expand opportunities of professional education for children from multicultural families who need language development and speech therapy in a day care center, a child-care institution. The study also shows the need for partnership with speech therapists, speech-language pathologists, and the necessity of proper intervention of teachers at day care centers.
