The fuel used to train deep learning models is the data collected from real world phenomena. Therefore, any explicit or implicit miss-representations of the data would cause a significant decrease in the performance. As a concrete example of this problem, automatic arrhythmia detection using modern machine learning techniques was always difficult due to the huge imbalance between normal heartbeats and abnormal ones. Furthermore, researchers always relied on heavy data pre-processing, which is computationally expensive, thus they limited the use of their methods only on expensive ECG devices with significant computing power. In this thesis, we propose a deep convolutional neural network architecture that uses a batch-weighted loss function. The loss-weights are calculated dynamically for each class per batch. The proposed model excels in classifying heartbeats and overcomes the severe imbalanced data problem. Also, it achieves state-of-the-art results without any data pre-processing and using only 1-lead ECG device. It outperforms other classical and novel approaches under two different evaluation paradigms. After building and testing the mentioned method, we build a simple low-cost ECG device and as a proof of concept, we test the proposed method on it for real-time classification.
