This study follows the phenomenological research method in order to show the meaning penetrating the experience of 9 child-rearing unwed mothers who experienced participation in Human Library. The researcher made five main categories as the result of the study: “social prejudice”, “decision to resist prejudice”, “what I found out by being a human book”, “feeling pride through changing the reader”, and “the meaning of being active in Human Library.” Consolidating these categories, the focus is on mutual teaching and learning, in which child-rearing unwed mothers participate in Human Library in order to raise awareness, but they also feel themselves improving in their awareness and growing as individuals. Examining each of the main categories, first, after learning the reality that they had become unwed mothers, most of the research participants could not go out with acquaintances or even go to the hospital easily because of prejudice against child-rearing unwed mothers. Likewise, people in the general public hold prejudice against child-rearing unwed mothers, so they can even have experiences of discrimination. Second, the research participants participated in Human Library with the wish that people in the general public could improve their prejudice, which they don’t know they have, and through this activity, it was hoped that child-rearing unwed mothers and the children of child-rearing unwed mothers will become a bit more free from prejudice in the future. Third, the research participants changed continuously during course of preparing to become a human book, to the time of the human book activity. They reaffirmed their strong points that they had before they became child-rearing unwed mothers, and they even made a new identity called “Human Book.” Participants in the research on prejudice against child-rearing unwed mothers improved their awareness of their self-confidence about being a child-rearing unwed mother through a group for unwed mothers, which they attended before engaging in activity to become a human book, as well as in interactions with readers at Human Library. Fourth, the research participants experienced social prejudice and discrimination while living as child-rearing unwed mothers, but at Human Library, they received strength for living as they formed empathy with readers and saw the change in readers. Fifth, while participants participated in Human Library, they experienced gradual change, like the growing butterfly effect. In addition, I think that this activity contributes to eliminating widespread societal prejudice against child-rearing unwed mothers, but volunteers cannot do this work on their behalf. Only the unwed mothers can do this activity and feel pride in it. Against the background of this study’s findings, my recommendations are summarized as follows. First, participants in the study were active as human books in the Human Library, and resolved prejudices about child rearing unwed mothers that were carried by themselves. Accordingly, agencies that support child-rearing unwed mothers should provide continuous education and emotional support so unwed mothers no longer think of themselves as weak people, but rather responsible people who decided to raise their children. Second, the way that the Human Library in this study was conducted was a little different than the way it is conducted in a library, but both the human books and the readers were able to grow. Accordingly, the person planning the Human Library should support social minorities so it is not difficult for them to do the activity as a human book, whether the format is preexisting or a different one. Third, the participants of this study felt Human Library’s effectiveness and look forward to the growth of Human Library, but expressed regret that there is no dedicated staff for it. Therefore, dedicated staff will be needed to sustain and develop Human Library. Fourth, to raise awareness about discrimination against child-rearing unwed moms and their children as a social problem, economically active child-rearing unwed mothers who participate in Human Library should be supported so they do not suffer economically because of their participation. Fifth, it is necessary for experts who meet child-rearing unwed mothers to participate in Human Library to understand the practical difficulties of the users, and to reflect on his or her own prejudices in the course of their training and education.
Key words: Child-rearing Unwed Mothers, Human Library, Qualitative method.
