This is a quasi-experimental study using the design before and after time gap of non-equivalence with comparative group performed to confirm the effects of END smoking cessation motivational program on the physiological indications, psychological factors and smoking cessation behaviors in the smoking high school students. The study subjects were the smoking students in a general high school located in C-City who were interested in the smoking cessation including 27 students in test group and 28 in the control group. Data collection period was from July 12 to October 4, 2018. END smoking cessation motivational program, the test intervention in this study, is a smoking cessation education program developed for the smoking adolescents in 2012 at the first time and amended in 2014. The investigator intervened the program upon amendment and supplement to meet the school practices, and evaluated the program effects with physiological indications(exhaling carbon monoxide, urine cotinine), psychological factors(self-esteem, smoking cessation self-efficiency), and smoking cessation behaviors(days of smoking, amount of smoking). The collected data were analyzed with real numbers, frequency, percentage, Fisher’s exact test, χ2-test, t-test, independent sample Mann Whitney U-test, and paired t-test using SPSS Win 23.0.
The study results are as follows. Hypothesis 1. “There will be a difference of physiological Indications between the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program and the control group that does not” is rejected. Hypothesis 1-1. “The concentration of exhaling carbon monoxide in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be lower than that in the control group” is rejected (z=404.500, p=.655). Hypothesis 1-2. “Negative responses of urine cotinine test in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be more than those in the control group” is rejected (χ2=2.152, p=.236).
Hypothesis 2. “There will be a difference of physiological factors between the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program and the control group that does not” is supported. Hypothesis 2-1. “The score of self-esteem in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be higher than that in the control group” is supported (z=262.500, p<.05). Hypothesis 2-2. “The score of smoking cessation self-efficiency in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be higher than that in the control group” is supported (z=110.000, p<.001).
Hypothesis 3. “There will be a difference of smoking cessation behavior between the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program and the control group that does not” is supported. Hypothesis 3-1. “Days of smoking in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be lower than those in the control group” is supported (z=640.000, p<.001). Hypothesis 3-1. “Amount of smoking in the test group that participates in END smoking cessation motivational program will be lower than those in the control group” is supported (z=520.500, p<.05).
Considering these results, END smoking cessation motivational program showed the effects to enhance self-esteem and smoking cessation self-efficiency in the smoking high school students, lower the days of smoking, and decrease the amount of smoking. Hence, the application of this program is suggested to lower the smoking rate of the smoking high school students and to motivate the smoking cessation at the schools.
