This study analyzed the effects of music therapy program for youth at-risk by meta-analysis of the graduate degrees and journals published in Korea. The research papers were collected using RISS (www.riss.kr), DBPia (www.dbpia.kr) and KISS (kiss.kstudy.com). The primary keywords used to search and collect data from 2000 to 2018 were ‘music therapy’ and ‘youth’. Based on this, in accordance to the Youth Welfare Support Act classification, 125 papers were selected and were screened. Eliminating the ones without statistically available data, 25 papers were finally selected. The overall result shows that the effect of music therapy program for youth at-risk is very high (g=1.22). As a control variable, the type of youth at-risk had a moderating effect on the music therapy program (Qb=19.32, p=.002) as shown in the following order: adolescents having maladaptation problems in school (g=2.00), adolescents staying in facilities (g=1.82), adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems (g=1.25), adolescents from low-income families (g=1.14), delinquent adolescents (g=0.82), adolescents from multi-cultural families and North Korean defectors (g=0.78). On the other hand, the type of dependent variable didn't have a moderating effect (Qb=2.89, p=.236) as shown in the following order: sociability variable (g=1.45), reinforcement variable (g=1.24), inhibiting variable (g=1.02). Furthermore, other variables which include age group, treatment period, treatment time and treatment cycle had moderating effects. First, the age group (Qb=6.16, p=.013) shown in the following order: middle school(g=1.39), high school(g=0.89). Second, the treatment period (Qb=2.89; p=.236) showed that the size of the effect was higher than that of the short term(g=1.41). Next, treatment time (Qb=4.97, p=.083) shown in the following order: ‘more than 50 minutes and less than 70 minutes (g=1.44)’, ‘less than 50 minutes(g=1.16)’, ‘more than 70 minutes(g=0.92)’. Lastly, the treatment cycle (Qb=7.29, p=.026) as shown in the following order: short-term(g=1.75), medium-term(g=1.08), and long-term(g=0.96). In conclusion, this study suggests the importance of understanding the effect of music therapy in youth at-risk comprehensively to help establish the therapeutic environment necessary in the music therapy intervention. Moreover, music therapy can be effective in treating adolescents staying in facilities or having maladaptation problems in school. The younger the adolescents undergo therapy, the more effective and shorter the duration of the therapy becomes.
