This research implemented a professional learning community at school with special education teachers and general education teachers to explore measures to solve the separated education between special education class and general class. It aimed to investigate the changes from the school and teacher levels.
For the purpose, this research recruited 2 special education teachers and 3 general education teachers from S Elementary School located in Incheon. The researcher participated in the research as a researcher and a research participant. The special education teachers and general education teacher organized a professional learning community and gathered on a regular basis, and they sometimes met in pairs. The research was conducted in the 3 phases of action plans-implementation-reflection. In the phase of action plans, the goal, period, place, and role as well as study topic were determined, and they were implemented at the school and class levels after professional learning community activity in the phase of implementation. In the phase of reflection, the results of the implementation were discussed. They gathered once a month as a professional learning community to perform discussion, research, and self-training. The researcher recorded the details of the activity of the professional learning community and wrote observation notes. A semi-structured group interview was conducted after the 1st semester, and non-structured individual interviews were caried out after the 2nd semester.
The research results are as follows: First, there were changes in the process of the school education. Education for understanding disabilities were changed into activity considering not only exceptional children but also general children, and athletic meetings were changed from a program focused on individual’s performance to a program focused on group competitions. Additionally, unlike the past when plans for individualized education were established only for special education class, plans for integrated education were developed to prepare gain a foothold to reinforce integrated education even for general education.
Second, cooperation among the teachers improved. In the past, there had been cooperation only among teachers in the same grade of classes, and it was rare for special education teachers and general education teacher to cooperate. However, they started communicating through the professional learning community, experiencing cooperation and improving cooperation among them.
Third, expertise of each teacher enhanced. Through the activity of professional learning community, effective education measures for special education class and general education were explored in terms of support for teaching, life guidance, ways of playing, teaching with books for understanding disabilities, and access to general education process. Moreover, the teachers improved their expertise by experiencing and practicing them in their actual classes.
Fourth, the teachers’ awareness changed. Before the research, the special education teachers had difficulties in asking general education teachers to cooperate or had a negative perception of general education teachers. After the research, however, they no longer felt it difficult to ask for cooperation from general education teachers, and their negative perception on general education teachers changed to a positive one. As for the general education teachers, they used to think that education of exceptional children would be only special education teachers’ responsibility, but they got to have interest in exceptional children and think that it was also part of their role.
Based on such research results, this research provides implications on cooperation measures between special education teachers and general education teachers.
