The purpose of this study is to trace the archetype of Eupseong and Upchi Facilities, to show how this structural changes made by pivot have affected the function of Eupseong and to investigate how these changes have interlinked the social system throughout the Joseon Dynasty with the organic relationship. The focus of this study was on the change of structures and functions in Eupseong and Upchi Facilities such as ① re-structuring its system after founding Joseon Dynasty, ② overcoming the Japanese invasion of Joseon(Imjinwaeran), and ③ establishing king-centered politics around the 18th century.
All of these three periods were time to exert powerful kingship to establish the centralized kingdom. This study was found that Eupseong and Upchi Facilities were built with the aim of establishing the local ruling order for the emergence of the kingship.
The main reason to establish Eupseong began with defence and protection plan against the Japanese pirates around the period of the late Goryeo and early Joseon. At the same time, it was centered on protecting the government complex and administrative buildings which was manifestly representing the kingship rather than military facilities. After Two great wars(Imjinwaera & Byeongjaholan), Eupseongs were abandoned and terminated by its uselessness. In the process of implementing the king-centered politics around the 18th century, some regions were, however, rebuilt them to establish the local ruling order. Although Eupseong was built with its gate, it must have the splendor of its exterior design as a gateway.
