Injury Severity Analysis of Cyclists in Two Wheeler to Taxi Crashes: An Application of Vehicle Black Box Data in Incheon, Korea원문보기

Historically, crash data used in traffic safety analysis has been collected by the police officer. Since the police officer is dispatched to the crash scene after the crash occurrence, however, crash information inevitably includes errors influencing on traffic safety analysis. Such errors includes crash speed, crash time, crash location, and other crash characteristics. In recent, the advancement of in-vehicle video event record technologies, called a vehicle black box (VBB), enables the traffic safety professionals to use more accurate crash information. This study analyzes the injury severity of two-wheeler (TW) riders in taxi-to-TW crashes with the accurate crash data collected from VBBs equipped in taxis. To perform this objective, 248 crash data from a two-year period (2010-2011) are used. Since the injury severity is related to various safety variables such as level of hospitalization and level of walkability in appearance, structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to identify the relationship between variables associative with injury severity and their affecting variables. The estimated model suggests that road characteristic factors (section with more lanes, section with traffic signals, and section with median), taxi characteristic factors (higher operating speed, higher crash speed, and broadside crash), and two-wheeler characteristic factors (damaged TW, motorcycle-typed TW, crashes where the secondary impact region of TW riders is their head, and crashes where the third impact object of TW riders is roadway) have a great effect on the injury severity of TW riders. This study was conducted based on the data reconstructed by a manual method from VBBs. However, if an automatic crash reconstruction method from in-vehicle video event recording systems is developed, the presented analysis procedure or approach can serve as a basis in increasing road traffic safety.
