Mae-bang Lee’s Salpuri Dance well-known as the major sec of Salpuri Dance and a product of typical gibang (entertainment establishments) art is featured as quite outstanding skills of dance movements expressing grief, joy and fun that represent the Korean traditional emotions. Salpuri Dance has been designated as the Korean Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 97 in 1990 for having been appreciated as its artistic and preservative value. Today, Salpuri Dance has showed a different style in dance order, required time and dance movements, amid much change and process. Given that Salpuri Dance is an intangible cultural property whose original form must be preserved, it is necessary to carry out an exhaustive investigation of the flow of this dance and record the process of such a flow in order to hand down the property to the next generations, keeping intact, without leaving its form ruined and destructed, amid a rapidly changing society. In this regard, this study meant to analyze the structure of motion cluster of Salpuri Dance of 1994 and 2005 as of the date when Salpuri Dance was designated as a cultural property, and to investigate the features and causes of structural change by comparing to the dance combination movements and its similar motion cluster. The features of structural change were presented through a comparative analysis of each motion cluster of Salpuri Dance of 1994 and 2005. It is as follows: First, the parts of Salpuri tune and jajinmori tune of Salpuri Dance are organized with the basic structures of the sequences of motion elements: ‘Hab- Gul/Geo (Geo/Gul)- Ha/Ha-Hap.’ Second, the sequence of the basic motion elements consisting of motion cluster is basically organized with the principle of Yin-Yang. Third, the dance movements of Salpuri Dance are monotonous, as time goes by. Fourth, there is a gradually less shape of arms connected long without any change, as time passes by. Lastly, a few motion elements are left out, as time passes by, or the repetitive appearance of motion elements has an influence on the number of Salpuri Dance tune. Through this research, the structural principle and the changing pattern of Mae-bang Lee’s Salpuri Dance was understood. There is a change in order, length and movements of Mae-bang Lee’s Salpuri Dance, as time lapses. Such a change results from improvisation, the major feature that Salpuri Dance has. For, specifically, Mr. Mae-bang Lee performed a dance, reflecting plainly the improvisation of Salpuri Dance enabling to dance freely according to subjective expressions and subjective emotions, although Salpuri Dance was standardized in dance order and form, across the ages. It is also considered that his advanced age and his problem with health brought about such a change. With his age reaching advanced and his physical strength deteriorating owing to his life that was fighting against his illness, he might have difficulties in following and representing the original form of dance movements. Such causes might bring the dance movements of Salpuri Dance to be transformed into a simple structure or might lead to a change that some tunes are left out. A traditional dance, that is, an intangible property without any formation to be expressed by someone, by all means always needs to have its changing patterns of dance investigated in depth and have its structural principle understood, in order to preserve and hand down its original form. It is advised that this research would be of even a little help for the original form of Mae-bang Lee’s Salpuri Dance to be preserved and handed down, and that the sustained research about it would be carried out, based on this current research.
