Domestic building related laws require the use of external materials to be use more than quasi-noncombustible materials at piloti, multi-generation, and multi-unit buildings increasing damage caused by vertical flame propagation in case of fire. In this study, tried to reduce the fire damage by preventing or delaying the vertical flame propagation by installing a non-combustible cantilever directly above the openings. For this purpose, according to the test method of BS8414-1, EPS, which used as a exterior material for dryvit and sandwich panel, is attached to the wall of the test set and ignited on the wood in the combustion chamber so that compare the time to reach 600 ℃ by the detector installed at 7 m height from floor using large-scale fire test and FDS for the vertical flame propagation characteristics with and without cantilever installation. The width of cantilever is installated perpendicular to the test wall and the length of cantilever is extended horizontally to the edge of the test wall, as a result, simulations and experiments confirmed that the 80 cm wide cantilever specified by the IBC code is difficult to prevent the vertical flame propagation depending on the external material, and the simulation results of extending the cantilever length showed that the flame could prevent the spread to the upper part. It can be confirmed as follows. First, it is confirmed that the flame can spread to the upper part according to the exterior material and the physical properties of the EPS vary depending on the manufacturer and the product even if the 80 cm cantilever is installed. Second, simulated varying the width of the cantilever from 60 cm to 100 cm, confirming that the time it was delivered to the upper part could have been delayed, but that even at 100 cm the flame could have been extended to the upper part. Third, the cantilever is extended at the edge of the building to increase the length from 20 cm to 70 cm, and simulation shows that the flame does not spread at the top when the length of the cantilever was over 50 cm. In this study, the limitation of the simulations is it does not reflect the physical phenomena such as melting of EPS which is shown in the real fire test. However, in the experiments and simulations, the patterns such as the rapid growth of combustion at temperatures of 300 ℃ or higher are similar, and the possibility of studying the shape of the cantilever through simulations was confirmed, and to research combustion characteristics and fire risk are necessary on various types of exterior materials other than dryvit and sandwich panels.
