Aim: Positive effects are anticipated for children with intellectual disabilities who engage in physical activities, however there are have been limited studies regarding the pros and cons. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of taking part in a physical activity program on the gross motor development and physical fitness in children with intellectual disability. Materials and Methods: The subjects included elementary students aged between 8 and 10. The eighteen participants enrolled in this study were divided into two groups: normal group (control group, n=8) and intellectual disability group (experimental group, n=10). The physical activity program was composed of warm-ups (15 min), workout (40 min), and cool-down (5 min) for 12 weeks. Warm-ups involved stretching and movement/locomotion training. The workout consisted of a modified badminton program from Week 1 to 4, a basketball program from Week 5 to 9, and a weight training program from Week 9 to 12. To observe the changes before and after the experiment, the differences of the values were evaluated using non-parametric analysis. Results: The 12-week physical activity program improved gross motor capacity involving locomotion and object control in children with intellectual disability. However, the gross motor capacity in children with intellectual disability required 25~33% more development to be comparable to the improvements seen in normal children. Similarly, the physical activity program improved muscular endurance and flexibility in the intellectually disabled group, except for balance. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the 12-week physical activity program improved gross motor capacity, muscle endurance, and flexibility in children with intellectual disabilities, but did not provide a significant change in balance ability.
